    Cleaning handcuffs

what does everyone use to clean the blood off your handcuffs? my cheese gave me some stuff called virkon to clean them last week when this chick painted both sets that i put on her. anyone heard of that stuff? luckily, it didn't rust my blued peerless, but it stiffened up my stainless smiths. i'm going to have to get the gun oil out and try and work it into the locks again.

I use any commercial antiseptic, following it's instructions, then follow up by oiling them well, since antiseptics can be water based.

Water and bleach in a spray bottle works in the field. Preferred to boil mine with some detergent. Dry and lightly oil them. Good time to check the chain, locks, and ratchets are clear from crud or tampering.

Full stregnth bleach works wonders to clean them. After they dry a good oiling will keep your cuffs in good shape.

Surgical Alcohol in a shallow tray let them soak for a while then take em out shake em off. spray them with WD40 or any water dispersant, then a decent oil (I use youngs 303 gun oil which I found at work in the old gun lsafe). Let them "dry" on a couple of sheets of newspaper to soak up the excess oil.

It's amazing how much snot and poop comes out of the cuff when in the alcohol

Anyone been to the S&W academy?
-Take a class and tour the factory. Not only is it interesting, you will learn a few things. I took a class and thsi is what we were told about cuffs:

    1) NEVER, EVER, clean your cuffs by dropping them in plain water. Why? RUST! Now when you take them out, and let them dry, water is trapped inside, and even a drop or two can casue lock problems in time. They show this there. It may casue them to eventually freeze, it may casue the lock to "snap." Either way you are screwed!

    2) Next...they go over how some guys says: "I dry them with a hair dryer." Again, no ggod. 100% of the water can not evaporate, so you are heating metal....with moisture present. What do you get? Rust...over time of course.

They actually show cuffs cut open and apart that they did testing on with different ways.

Now we have a untrasonic machine we dunk ours in. But the fluid is from a manufacturer recommended by the S&W and Peerless. The fluid is concentrate of a mild alkaline based cleaner with rust inhibitor. We mix it with water, dunk them in the fluid in the machine, and let it air dry. Then wd-40 and off you go.

They instructed us that when cleaning and no solution is available, always use alcohol.....it evaporates quickly...thus leaving no to little moisture to casue problems.

    Just what I learned!
-In God we trust. All others, put your hands on the car and don't move.
