It just keeps getting worse for the PPD. First the "beating" tape, and now this:
May 5, 2005 — A man is in custody who allegedly put a bounty on the heads of two Philadelphia police officers... except the police got him first.
Action News has learned that Friday morning a man named Terell Boyd, AKA "Joey Black", will face attempted murder charges. He's accused of putting out a hit on 2 decorated officers, offering $30,000 to anyone who killed the cops.
The officers who had the huge bounty on their heads work out of the 15th district in plain clothes specializing in narcotics investigations.
They set their sights on taking down a drug ring working in the area of Frankford and Faulcroft in the Frankford section. They were good at it, making hundreds of arrests.
But, police say they were too good for the likes of the drug ring's reputed leader, Terrel Boyd, AKA "Joey Black."
According to a search warrant obtained by Action News, "Joey Black" had placed a bounty on their heads for the amount of 30-thousand dollars.
Someone nearly collected. On the night of the Super Bowl, one of the officers was off-duty on the way home from a party when another car bumped into him at Duncan and Aramingo. The car continued to try and run the officer off the road as he got on I-95 at Aramingo and then back off the highway at Bridge Street. Then in the 1600 block of Haworth, someone in the other car opened fire. Five bullets struck the officer's car. He wasn't hit.
"We're going on the assumption at this point that that attempt was part of this contract or hit put out on the police officers."
At an FOP event Thursday night honoring officers' courage and valor, Commissioner Sylvester Johnson talked about the cops' bravery staying on the job even in the face of danger.
Commissioner Sylvester Johnson/Philadelphia Police: "What you're telling me is about someone putting a hit out on an officer who is doing his job. I think it's disgraceful and the fact that we caught these people... before an officer got hurt."
Police aren't sure if the danger has passed so they've asked Action News not to give the officers' names yet. They have moved out of their homes with their families. Four people, including the shooter on the highway, have been arrested in connection with this incident. "Joey Black" is already in police custody on unrelated charges. Friday, he'll be charged with attempted murder, soliciting murder, assault and related offenses.
