Same here.....even in teh city! We still use them! I got to AAA at least 3x a year and walk out with more aps than you can imagine......and usually a set for me and a set for each of my co-workers! Best $45 a year ever!

-In God we trust. All others, put your hands on the car and don't move.
Back in 95' my Sgt. pulled me from my FTO and handed me a map and a pair of keys on midnight shift. Said, "Son...You're on your own, just remember.... when the street signs change color, turn around."
Today.... I type the address in the puter and some sexy voice comes back and gives me directions. I love technology!!!
"Be polite. Be professional. But have a plan to kill everyone you meet."
A good officer learns his area so he/she doesn't have to rely on the computer for directions. WHat if the computer crashes or otherwise breaks down ?
Even NYPD officers don't have to learn the entire city. I cover 80 square miles including 5 small towns some with duplicate named streets. Repetition and time on the job has given me a good idea where just about everything is.

The problem in my area is that there are new streets opening up every week, and by the time you learn them, the next neighborhood just got constructed. It can get irritating, especially since our maps don't update that fast. Being lost is one thing, but being lost with no map? And even dispatch doesn't even know where some of these places are... they say they THINK it's in the new subdivision whatever, but their not 100% sure.
Argh.
yea but I mean this doesnt come to you the first day you ride on your own tho..Originally Posted by mcsap
