Gun Safety Technology

The "smart" devices all are dangersous to a LE officer with one on his/her gun, IMO.
The others are fine, I suppose. But education and discipline are best.

Remember those who died, remember those who killed them.
I'm not crazy about any radio controlled devices. The little Taurus .45 cal I have now has a built in lock. I lock it whenever my grandkids come over, even though I keep it up in the hall closet at home. One grandson is a devious little **** and I don't trust him.
I'm all for gun safety, but I want something mechanical that I know is either working or not. But that's just me....

I think gun locks and smart gun technology are a solution in search of a problem.

I don't know, my kids were raised with my guns around and they were taught to leave them alone. Although IF they wanted to touch them, all they had to do was ask me. But neither of my daughters and their husbands have guns in their houses so it's new to my grandkids. And they aren't my kids. Locking the gun when they're here is a reasonable thing to do IMO.Originally Posted by Norm357

We were fine without gun locks for 200 years till a lawyer told us we were not resposible enough. I have bought one gun with the "lock" and I promptly removed it. With the exception of the gun on my side and in my pocket, the rest of my guns are in the safe.

Yeah, but kids do kill each other with guns all the time. If someone isn't smart enough to put it away where they can't get it, then a gun lock is the next alternative. If those people will put a lock on their gun, why not?Originally Posted by Norm357

And I don't own nearly enough guns (1) to warrant a gun safe.

So you blame the gun? An inanimate object? Yeah ok. How about instead of putting a lock on a gun, go after the irresponsible gun owner?Yeah, but kids do kill each other with guns all the time. Of course, I'm not blaming the gun, Norm. What's the moral difference in locking your gun in a safe and putting on a gun lock? I don't have a safe, so I used the locking mechanism on my gun.Originally Posted by Norm357

Also, I have personally seen two S&W funky metal (Scandium or titanium) wheel guns become paperweights because of that stupid lock. I would hate to seethat happen to someone in a fight for their life! A better alternative would be ab aftermarket trigger lock or something along that line.

I am fine with a couple of guns loaded in my house when no other kids are here. My daughter knows safety and I trust her to leave them alone. Also she is never alone in my bedroom where they are. We do not leave her home alone, EVER, and the design of our house puts the bedroom in its own little wing of the house.
When other kids are over, I lock the bedroom door and office door. Even at that, we watch the kids and know where they are.
There are more than guns in a home that can injure or kill a kid.

It seems everyone thinks that making things idiot proof gets rid of idiots!
The last thing you want to do in a gunfight is have to reboot windows..I mean your gun!
This is a cool idea but has quite a bit of developement ahead...

I agree completely. As I said earlier, I was comfortable with my daughters around loaded guns and later, my stepsons. I kept the guns from being something that was mysterious. To too many kids, guns are just too attractive if they aren't familiar with them.Originally Posted by txinvestigator1
I always kept my duty weapon loaded and on the top shelf of the hall closet. When I was working drug labs, due to some threats I kept a short barrel 12 guage by my bed. If someone elses kids came over, the shotgun was unloaded and put away until the kids left. When I had friends over, I didn't want to constantly be watching their kids.
The little Taurus I have now has sort of a allen wrench key that locks in internally and I lock it when my grandkids come over. It's in the hall closet, but I just feel more comfortable with it locked. They aren't around guns and it might be too tempting to them. Why take the chance?
But I don't live in a neighborhood or town where I'm especially worried about needing access to it right away either.
