    Fun Fact

The average size of a Police Dept in the state of Alabama is 4 officers. Thats right. 4..... F-O-U-R. Just something that amazed me. Guess its so low b/c some of the Po-dunk towns in this state only have one fully sworn in officer who is the Chief :D Any of you guys have some fun and interesting facts about LE in your state, post away. I'd love to hear how Alabama stacks up.

I drove to St. George Island in Florida and went through a town named Carrabelle. They have the "World's Smallest Police Station" in front of their establishment...a phone booth.

I heard the phone line goes directly to the phone of the police chief. I guess he works out of his house or is constantly on the road.
Eunice: A .22? Oh you've gotta be kidding me. That's like bringing a knife to a gunfight.
Detective Greenly: Yeah, or bringing a really small gun... to a gunfight.

We have 2100+ sworn officers now, God only knows of the interesting statistics I could provide. OH, we (The Dept.) were recently aquitted in a biased hiring lawsuit filed by several hispanic deputies. See here....http://www.sacsheriff.com/media/0420_biasclaim.cfm

We get that stuff a lot!! LOL.

A couple of the small dept's in my county go off duty around 0200 and put the State Police on call for any calls until their dayshift officer somes on around 0700.

The last dept. we "took over" had ONE officer. And he held the position of Chief. He was full time ( 40 hours) a week. He would radio to county that he was on duty as he was about 10 miles away from his jurisdiction heading to work and do the opposite when going off.

The township I grew up in had 3 officers, Frank, Gerry and Kevin, WE still have Kevin but are up to 10 officers but several are part time. We have departments of 1 officer. I heard from a Philly cop that PA has the most police departments of any state in the union.

No one to ask if you can take the day off, you get to sign your own overtime, have as long as you want on your break and pick the best car to drive

While you went to Auburn for undergrad, I went to the Univ. of Montevallo. The PD in Montevallo, AL was maybe 10, but they included the chief, a Lt. (who was also the only detective and assistant administrative officer), a Sgt. and a corrections officer and the rest patrol officers. They were tiny.

The county I work in is the smallest self governing county in the country at a whopping 26 square miles, but the PD has over 300 sworn officers.

most of the towns around here don't even have a police department. Some have a department until like 10 at night and then state takes over. A lot of the towns here rely on either the sheriff's office or state to respond to emergencies in their town. makes it tough to get a job - so few departments...
