    Interview

After about a year of work and effort with applying to different departments, I have finally got myself an interview. I just got off the phone with the Capt (who is also acting Chief) that I have been talking to since before he became acting Chief. It's been hard to get ahold of him recently because he's actively looking for a new Chief. Finalyl got ahold of him today and he has set up an interview time. He has a buddy of mine in the pull time academy right now and wanted me to be in this class too but I am in a contract at my current job so I am looking for PT work.

Interview is May 4th. It will be me, the Capt (acting Chief) and probably a Road Srgt. Should I go all out in a suit (would hafta buy one but expected that for the O-Board) or is shirt and tie and dress pants ok? What are your opinions? Thanks

^^^ re post 2*****That was certainly helpful. ***NOT!

First of all, congratulations on your tenacity.

To answer your question I will ask you another. Do you want to look YOUR BEST and as a professional, or do you just want to look OK, like you could take or leave the job?

    Best of luck to you.

Don't underestimate the pull that the Patrol Sgt. would have in this interview. He is going to be your first line supervisor and how you present yourself at this interview will be his first chance to see what kind of prospective officer you would be. How do you want to be perceived?

Thanks everyone. The conversations on the phone with the Capt have been great too. Since my buddy is currently in the academy I have something to talk to him about too so I have had some good conversations. A way to present myself over the phone in a positive light. I was on the phone with him for a good 20 minutes today and he was asking me about my current job and how things are shaping up here (college security), so it's been good - when I can get ahold of him.

Let me throw something else out there. I don't currently own a suit. I will have to buy one (obviously). I don't have a lot of money but I can spring for the suit but then what do I do about an O-Board, should I get that far. Do I just change up the shirt and tie with a second interview and still use the 1 suit or do I have to buy two? I would rather be able to buy one nice one and wear it to both than buy two 'cheaper' suits. Also - color? Navy? Grey? What's a good option?

Thanks again for all the help guys. I appreciate it. I want this job so badly and I usually interview very well. I have a degree in Business Administration and was a manager for a large company so I have been on both sides of the process and know what they will be looking for and how to present myself. I knew the answer before I asked it with the suit but wasn't sure since he was talking like it was kinda 'casual' me and him thing. Then I asked because we were talking about all the testing and how he's gonna get me set for that end of things so I asked if it was gonna be just me and him or what and he said that he was probably gonna have a Road Srgt sit in too. That's when I realized it was a little more than just a little chat between the two of us.

My advice - MW (Men's Warehouse), great suits that are affordable. In addition, I would go with one nice 3 button black suit. You always want a black suit and you will be able to rotate shirts and ties out like no other. In addition, I would suggest wearing the black suit, white shirt, red tie, IMO very professional!! Another variation is to go with a yellow tie (blue shirt), as some believe the colors signify power and intelligence (red & yellow)...if you pay close attention Bush tends to always wear red (Power).

Thank you for the input. I like the black 3 button idea. I think I will be picking up a white and a blue shirt and a red and a yellow tie :D
I've heard about the red power tie many-a-time but never the yellow. Thanks again

    Here's my update....
    So WTF does this mean??:

    William,
Thank you for your recent inquiry regarding employment with the XXXXXX Police Department. We regret to inform you we are no longer considering you as a prospective applicant for employment.
Your interest in our agency is appreciated, and it is our hope that you will succeed in your endevors.
If you read the backgroud above...I got along with this guy over the phone very very well and the interview went AWESOME (I thought). I went in a $300 suit I bought soley for this process because I want to the job so badly. When I left he said "Let me get some testing dates scheduled and I will call you early next week (this was last friday) and we'll get you tested." Sounded positive to me right?
The only thing that kinda stuck out in the interview was when he started to ask about drug and alcohol use. I don't do either. I've had maybe a beer in my life and I have never done ANY drugs (other than Advil for my knee). He didn't seem to believe me but I explained my reasoning and everything. He kinda questioned that but I would thinkt hat the polygraph would show if I am lying right? I just don't get it.

Any ideas on what may have happened to cause this? We talked on the phone like 4x after he got my application and he seemed really excited to get me going with them PT then go FT in a year. Now this letter.
Now to start the process all over again with someplace else...

I assume that it wouldn't be wise to call and ask him huh? :(
