What tragedy for all involved, the officers and the man's family.
Perhaps a policy change is in order.
No officer should be lost in deploying sticks, the whole idea is to allow pursuits to come to a safe conclusion.
I am unsure of this one, but isn't there several styles of stop sticks?
One that allows remote control of the spikes into a upright position, then down so officers tires do not get spiked ?
If there isn't there should be, the officer should be able to be well away from the road, maybe even in his car so he has some shielding between him and the pursuit.
