    Take home vehicle question

I know that some depts. allow officers to take their patrol car home, with that, what are the parameters concerning the use of the vehicle while not on duty?

Is there a certain amount of mileage you can not put on the vehicle when off duty? What about insurance coverage requirements? Is there a geographic distance limitation on use?

Thank you in advance for any replies.

We can take ours home if we live in the county anywhere. As far as driving it when we are off ther is no limitations on mileage. We just have to sign in the computer when we are in the car. There is certain things that we have to do when we are in the car. If we see someone stranded on the side of the road we are required to stop and assist them if they need it. Major priority calls that we are close too we will contact central and advise them that we are close and if they fell that we need to go then we go.

We have take home cars as well, and no there is no mileage limitation. We can use the car for a number reasons, all falling under "county business", such as uniform maint, pt, etc. Only requirement is to be attired so as to conduct business should the need arise...

I can drive mine anywhere inside the county limits, for any reason (other than going to a bar), at any time.

The only restrictions we have on our take home vehicles, we're not allowed to drive the car off the island and we aren't allowed to drive the boat onto the island. NO wreckin' the vehicles!!! Period. :p

Are officers required to keep the car clean and washed?

we allow our officers to basically drive in the county and adjacent county, its kinda wierd up here with cities, there are like 8 that all touch city limits!! they can use them for anything, barring drinking of course, pretty much same rules as all the above.
I do what I can do when I can do it.

I know it's a bit off topic but, have you ever had a reservist (Our town isn't that big so the reservists don't have there own junker) or another officer take your squad and leave it trashed and on empty?

The county to the North of us has a take hoem program and our county is considering it. The county to the north also has to sign on to the MDT and have badge and gun withthem while in the unit. They often go to church and grocery shopping in them. Of course they always park in the fire lane. lol

<<< have you ever had a reservist...or another officer take your squad and leave it trashed and on empty?>>>

When my reserve officers or cadets do that, they end up entering tickets into the computer for the next several shifts. That usually solves the problem.

Reserves are required to wash the car before shift, and if a cadet is riding with a reserve or a regular, the cadet has the responsibility to make it sparkle.

I have a take home car anyway, so it rarely gets used by others....it is soooo nice to just get in and drive w/o worry about the friggin mirrors or banging your knee on the steering wheel or console.

LMAO Tex, I like the way you think!

I can only use mine for official business. Outside of seminars, court, etc. it goes straight back and forth to work. And yes, I am responsible for the cleaning, getting maintenance done on schedule and all that other stuff.

New Mexico State Police and Department of Public Safety take their vehicles home. They have to keep the units spotless and there are regular inspections to ensure the vehicles are kept to standards. They can only operate them while on duty or other state sanctioned business. Maintenance records, fuel usage and mileage have to be meticulously recorded and if any discrepancy is found, the take home priviledge can be revoked.
