Getting pinned to a parking meter by a car had to hurt!
I'm Hub McCann. I've fought in two World Wars and countless smaller ones on three continents. I led thousands of men into battle with everything from horses and swords to artillery and tanks. I've seen the headwaters of the Nile, and tribes of natives no white man had ever seen before. I've won and lost a dozen fortunes, killed many men and loved only one woman with a passion a flea like you could never begin to understand. That's who I am. Now, go home, boy!

Police had to get creative in arresting a man armed with two knives at a downtown intersection during the Tuesday morning rush hour.

It started at approximately 7am - officers from 51 Division tried to calm the man while staying out of stabbing range, but he would not be subdued, at one point jumping up on the hood of a cruiser at Yonge and Wellesley Sts.

At least four cops surrounded the suspect, and made two attempts to arrest him. Eventually he was stopped more forcefully, as a slow-moving cop car managed to pin him between the front bumper and a bike stand. Officers also used pepper spray in the standoff.

The car backed up to release him, and at that point the man dropped the remaining knife and raised his hands to surrender. Officers then moved in and put him in handcuffs.

The man, believed to be in his 30s, is now in custody. He suffered a broken wrist and is now undergoing a psychiatric evaluation. The motive for the incident isn't clear.

The busy intersection was closed as police continued their probe.

The province’s Special Investigations Unit arrived on the scene, and will investigate the incident.

Witnesses apparently shouted at police to use Tasers on the man. At Queen’s Park, Community Safety Minister Monte Kwinter commented on the use of stun guns, but noted he wasn’t aware of Tuesday’s incident.

“The Tasers have never been meant to be used by every single police officer that’s on the street,” he said. “I don’t know the circumstances, but normally what would happen is that the police officer on the street would evaluate the situation and call for backup and call for people with Tasers if he needs them.”

Good call on the car. Gunfire could have gotten ugly with the cross fire as well as the crowded downtown area.

I think we should all remember the moral of this story: The Toronto police got the man to willingly drop the knife. (Albeit with a little "less-lethal" force).

You don't bring a taser to a knife fight. You bring a gun or in this case a car ;)

Pinning him against the parking meter was good, but tasering would have been better. :D

If you rob a gas station, you're only going to get about $100, but I get to see a K9 dog use your arm as a chew toy. For all I care you can keep the $100.

From the looks of the pics, I think the gun issue was covered. I just would have liked to see him flop around like a fish out of the water. :D

worked fine, but dayum. If someone is going to use deadly force (a car) might as well just shoot the guy.

don't know what kind of force continuum they have up north :D

Until you miss and put the round in your partner's head across the street or one of the gazillion citizens on the sidewalk and in their cars.
