JTTFs--how can I get me on one of those?

I wish there was a separate "promotions" thread here.

Anyway, how do local PD guys get to be on a JTTF? I'm thinking you at LEAST have to be a detective right? What if you have other skills that might be useful to a JTTF--e.g. language fluency, prior "specialized" military experience, etc?

First, your agency has to support the TF.

Second, you have to be swuared away enough to get put on it by your department.

You don't have to be a detective, just a sworn officer with the motivation. It can sometimes be dangerous work. It is usually compromised of DEA and local sworn officers, K9, vice/narcotics officers, etc.

From what I've seen in my area, a little politics never hurts. ;)

Here, the JTTF is comprised more of FBI, ATF, and locals.

That is about jist of it. Depending on what part of the country it varies. But in Detroit it is a bit more diverse with the border: Feebs, ATF, ICE (INS/Customs), (I think) USMS, and Detroit PD. As expected with the border and the largest Middle Eastern population outside of the Middle East, they are quite busy.

If I could stand working in Detroit I might try to get on it, but I can't stand working in that city. Thus I will stay in my little garden spots of Flint and Saginaw.

    LOL
Come on, man... eeryone knows I can't type.

...1 more thing. My supervisor just got off JTTF, prior to taking this position. According to him, you better like surveillance if you want to be on JTTF. In 2 years that is all they did...with 1 arrest of an disgruntled, anti-gov old man.. It's actually a fvery funny story, best told over beers. LOL

DEA usually has an agent assigned. But, they are not a major player in it except overseas in the obvious places.

A JTTF is a good place to be if you are in a large population center with persons of interest living there. If you are not in a place like that, it is going to be pretty boring.

It is not that hard to get on it where I am now. As a matter of fact, if I could get anyone to take my place on it, I would. The other person assigned to it and I fight every time about who has to go to the meetings because they are so boring. But, I have a friend assigned to the one for Washington DC and it's a full time job for him.

As far as I know, the Detroit JTTF is also a full time gig. I have heard about a lot of surveillance, but the crew here has had a few more arrest the 1. Holy cow, that is amazing. But hey, it sounds like a doozy of story that goes along with it.

    Jttf

In my office, no one wants to be on JTTF really. If you like being surveillance fodder for the FBI, go for it. We had three agents on the JTTF which happened because of the merger, one from legacy US Customs and two from legacy INS. After about a year of that, they took two off and left one on. Biggest things I see the JTTF do are - surveillance on suspected cells/cell members and respond to the airport (Customs area) whenever a no fly listed person or someone with "links to terrorism" comes through on an international flight.

Don't get me wrong, I am sure there are a lot of great things that JTTF's do out there that even we don't see and it's not like I debrief our JTTF agent. But, I do hear some of the gripes that the agents assigned had.

The other problem with the JTTF's is how many departments really have enough budget to assign some one to a special detail full time?

Many departments are having enough trouble justifying the staff they already have and then "handing off" staff to some one else, can be a real problem.
