Facts about guns used in Tyler

From a 3/1/05 press conference and the Tyler MOrning Telegraph

Shooter: David Hernandez Orroyo: MAK 90; one empty 40 round mag, one empty 30 round mag, one loaded 30 rounder; 180 rounds in boxes; and 10 loose rounds found with shooter and in his truck at the time of his death. Sixty-five empty cases recovered and identified as having been fired by Hernandez's MAK-90. Also, police report "a Remington model-7 .243-caliber, bolt-action deer rifle complete with a scope and fully loaded with five rounds" was recovered from his pickup.

Officials have said the first responding officers at the courthouse were outgunned and could not match the firepower that Arroyo had, but went into the line of fire to protect citizens and stop the man from killing anyone else.

Bingham said on Monday he believed the fatal shot came from a Tyler police officer armed with an AR-15-type weapon.

Swindle confirmed officers at the scene did in fact fire similar weapons.

"I can safely say there were two officers at that scene who were armed with the AR-15 or M-4, which are basically the same weapon, that fire a .223 round," he said.

Swindle did not know which officer fired the fatal shot because both fired their weapons.

chinese knock-off I could see how laymen could get them confused. However I remember in the gonzalez(sp) case the news reports were saying he was holding an m16 to the boys head, which of course it couldn't even really be confused it's like saying hummer vs pinto.

-edit -found the photo, yeah thought so it was an mp5 of some type and the news people called it an 'm16 like the military uses'.

Are they saying the police rifles were no match for it though?

I think they mean that, initially, the cops were outgunned. But then the guys with the AR-15's showed up.

As a side note, I know the media are no gun experts, but I like how they describe the AR-15/M4 as, "...basically the same weapon, that fires a .223 round."

One is select fire, the other is not. Other than that, they are the same.

In the media everything is an AK-47. Doesn't matter what it really is, if it was a bad guy and he had a rifle, it was an AK-47.

If you look closely at the video, there is a police car parked on the shoulder of the road in fron of the BG's truck. As the BG stops, you can see the officer run to a concealment position to the rear of his unit.

I wonder if he had an AR and fired at the BG. The timing is correct, as the BG goes down at about that time.

That was CRAZY!!!! I wonder if it wasn't one of the guys behind the camera who had the AR, perfect shot from the cameras perspective. The guy in that lead car was pretty lucky none of the rounds hit the idiot in the truck rubber necking. I'm surprised the guy didn't stop and ask for directions in the middle of the gunfight.

i wonder if any of the guys behind him were people i know? i've met a couple of their officers and had to testify last year at the same court house that the first part of the shooting happened at. we were parked in front of the steps where wilson was killed. i went to lunch with a lot of those guys. i'm glad none of them were badly hurt.
