How would I go about informing the police of a drug dealer in my community?
Thanks.

I would think you could just call the police department and let them know.
I want it to be anonymous though
Call em' up. And that's a serious answer for your serious question. ;)

Just depends on the circumstances...call the department, tell them you wish to remain anonymous, explain all the circumstances regarding this drug dealer you have information about, and ask them your questions.Originally Posted by JoeyCool

Take notes of when and where the guy deals. Write down a description of the guy. Try taking a picture (from far away of course).
Then write down why you don't want him in the neighborhood (you have kids, etc). Put it in a manilla envelope, address it to the watch commander, and drop it off at the front desk.
There is also crime tip hotlines. You could search for the online crime tip for your area and submit online too if available.
Anonymous tips are pretty much worthless and are generally treated as simple lookouts. You could go to the police station and ask to speak to an officer to make the report. That way nobody sees the cop car in your driveway but we can get valuable information and assistance. Generally an actual report that is made with your information will go to vice or narcotics. They will use it to look for patterns and see what followup investigation would be most helpfull.

If you are able to establish a pattern, observe it in repetition, and report that pattern, the anonymous tip becomes more credible and can potentially be construed as probable cause.Originally Posted by Valor55

"Yea, there's this dude in tan pants, black shoes, and a white hat sitting @ the bus stop @ 4th and Main. Every day at 1PM, he makes his way to the ABC Party store, where he meets up with a woman (provide description). At 1:30P, they'll go over to the Big City Park and meet up with such-and-such guy (description/location), where the man and the woman will trade what appears to be drugs for cash."

If the pattern is observed (by LE) as described by the anonymous tip, it IS enough for PC.
Difficult, yes. Rare, yes. Probable, probably not. Impossible - however - no.
We can't get a search warrant or go arrest someone because of an anonymous tip. It will take investigation to cover the legal hurdles to do it the RIGHT way. They are still innocent until proven guilty so we must be careful in how we proceed or it could get dismissed on a technicality.

a phone call like that is enuff for probable cause? how so?
