Absolutely!!! Joey, ya can't top this info from the Drug Enforcement Agency. Listen to him!

We get anonymous calls about drug dealing constantly. They are ignored because they are vague and we are too busy. They don't go to detectives. They aren't followed up on. They are useless.

If you are worried about being identified to your old pal, go to the PD and go inside and ask to speak to someone. You won't get the patrol car parked in your driveway. The information you give will be far more credible and taken more seriously.

If you call in an anonymous tip I can pretty much guarantee it will end up in the trash and nothing will happen.

We've pretty much been told that for ongoing investigations, anonymous informant will not be enough for a warrant. Registered informers on the other hand go quite a bit further.
Their idetity is protected, but we know who they are.

If you rob a gas station, you're only going to get about $100, but I get to see a K9 dog use your arm as a chew toy. For all I care you can keep the $100.

Every time you hear on the news about people running away from a crazed gunman, someone's son or daughter in a police uniform is running TOWARD that crazed gunman.

Contact your local agency and ask the officer to send the info to the narcotics unit.

If you choose to be anonymous, then so be it. I just send memos requesting our narc unit to investigate.

Sure, but you're preaching to the choir -- I don't think that anybody, myself included, is disputing this.

An anonymous tip - in,of and by itself - is NOT enough to create PC. It's the value of the information you provide in the tip -- more specifically, details of future actions by the perp that prove that the anonymous tip is reliable -- that helps make the tip enough for PC.

Keep in mind that there ARE cases where citizens are just flat out too scared to ID themselves (e.g., they fear retribution from the perp, his fellow gang members, his family, etc.), but that doesn't mean they don't want the problem addressed.

But, yes it IS best to provide YOUR information when providing a tip, as credibility is much more easily/readily confirmed and a judge is much more likely to issue a warrant versus an anonymous tip and "totality".
