Just found out the schedule for my academy.

Just curious if this is similiar to other 'part time' academies (by part time I mean not the normal 9-5, monday -friday classes)

    Monday, Teusday, and Thursday

    630pm - 1030pm

    Saturdays's 8am-5pm

    also Sundays when needed (evoc/shooting/etc)

The state mandate class here in GA is still holding at 404 hours I believe. So by my count, around 19 weeks. Just under 5 months. I start next monday, so I should be done by mid July if not a tad bit sooner. I'm glad I always had wished it would be less than 5, the initial run through was only 3 days a week 5.5-6 months. I'm glad they were able to get more hours in during the week.

Yup, sounds about right. Those academies aren't really part-time, because you spending A LOT of time outside.

    Good Luck!

Is that a police academy or a certification course at a college?

Sounds similar to ours, except mine lasted 8 months and was about 640 hours.

Sounds like the part -time academy that PA runs. It is held at the exact same college ( buildings-instructors) as the full time academy I went to. Just lasts about a year as opposed to the full time 5 month class.

I could see how it could be confusing as the way I'm paying for it is officially through a certificate program through Armstrong Atlantic U. Basically it's just the offices of the state funded HOPE grant for self sponsors. At least that's how it was explained to me. There are some GA cops on here that used the same HOPE Grant to go through their academy, they might be able to make it clearer.

Is self sponsoring common in GA? I know it can work well, especially if it is common.

I don't know. One of the guys on this board first told me about this HOPE grant back in 2003, but I had already lost the HOPE scholarship from school I thought it was the same program and never looked into it until 2004 when I was in the citizens tour thingie. That's when the citizen program coordinator told me it was a different program just funded from the same lottery budget. I was off running ever since. I know for the area of the state I live in, self sponsoring would have been about the only way for me to get certified 'before' I was 21. Most departments take 21+ only in the area (state pre-req is still only 18+) I live in, so I was lucky enough to find a department that was looking for reserves and the same people told me about a way to pay for it through this grant program.

As far as I know there is only 1 person/office in the state that does the paperwork for this program, so I'm guessing it's just not well known. I really don't know if self sponsoring (pre-service classification) is popular but as of right now there are 819 other people doing self sponsoring in the state. I think there are around 40k officers in 900 agencies in the state.

Isn't that the truth! My boyfriend graduates from the Academy tomorrow, and it was a full time program. He barely had any free time left after taking care of homework, cleaning his gun and uniform for inspections, praticing for scenarios, and other stuff. I'd try to help him when I could (like drilling him on the codes, or triming off every loose thread on his uniforms). But, time for us was tight, and sometimes non-existent.

But, we're both looking forward to this weekend, when he'll finally be done and we can spend some time together without him having to worry about going to class on Monday.

Sounds kind of similar to our part time academy at the Academy I'll be going to in a couple of weeks. Except for the hourly requirement. ours is 760hrs long. The night time academy (part-time) runs mon-fri 6-10. and then sat 8-5 I believe. Its 34 weeks long for the part time.

Daytime (mine) will be going to....

first day: 8-7pm. (expecting Hell Day for this one.) Was interviewed by the instructor Tuesday and from what it sounded like, Its going to be a weeding out day (and week)
everyday after (mon-thurs) until may: 5am-4pm. My day will begin at 3:30am
After that we get to sleep in, a little... When the other class graduates in May we go from 6am-5pm until we graduate. With the exception of nightime firing on the gun range and when we do driving.

The only problem I see with putting yourself through the academy, and of course it will vary from person to person is this. Lets say you put yourself through the academy and you for some reason do not get hired until a few years later. How much are you going to retain? Whereas if you get hired and sponsored, the ciriculum is fresh in your mind. I dunno, might not be that big of a deal but just something I was thinking at the moment.

I've given it thought as well. I'm sponsoring myself. With Florida you have to pass not only the academy, but then turn around and take your State Certification exam. I'm not sure what the rules and regs are when it comes to re-testing to keep your certification though.

My first concern though for self sponsoring is, unless your rich, or now in a huge amount of credit debt because of the loan for your exspenses you just took out, you will have to work a job while going to the academy. I'll be working two of them (part time jobs) and going to the academy. But since I'll be getting out at 4pm, and having 3 days off, its very possible to do (one job I make my own schedule as the week goes on). Going to be a pain in the ***, and very tough. But you have to do what you have to do. Down here not many will hire you without your certification all ready. Nearly every Dept I have seen their hiring requirements for, requires that you at least all ready be accepted into an academy, or have completed it and recieved your state certification all ready...

There is only a few depts. that come to mind off hand that will sponsor you around here.

that is a good point, and I'm still not guareented to actually get picked up by the people that set up this class as well. I still have to go through the same hiring process. Since I'll be close to 21 when I'm done I'm hoping I'll be able to a few more options/chances to have a 'paying' job by the time I get out. If not that's ok, the academy is still mandatory pre-requisite at any rate, and I don't mind doing reserve until I get a 'real job' :D

is it that competitive that you have to pay your own way for an academy?? or is that the way its done in your state? i guess im just used to the NYC way of getting hired and then get paid to complete the academy lol
