A 20-year veteran of the Wilmington Police Department who fired a gun into the ground to get the attention of his adolescent sons has been suspended without pay following his arrest in the case.
Master Cpl. Michael D. Brown, 50, of Wilmington, was released on $36,000 bail after he was charged with two counts each of reckless endangering and endangering the welfare of a child, and one count of possession of a firearm during a felony.
He faces a March 9 preliminary hearing on the charges.
According to court records, Brown went to his estranged wife’s Bear home about 5:45 p.m. Saturday to talk to their two sons, ages 15 and 12, about being disrespectful and doing poorly in school.
During the discussion, he asked his two sons to accompany him outside “where he pulled out a gun and shot it at the ground in front of the children to get their attention,” court records said.
The weapon was identified in court records as a black Smith & Wesson .40-caliber handgun.
Wilmington police spokesman Master Sgt. William Wells declined to comment further on the case. He said the department’s internal affairs unit is also investigating the incident.
