    Steven Shifflett arrested for Impersonation

    Story Number I
Suspect nabbed in police impersonation case

ALEXANDRIA, Va. A Charlottesville man is accused of pulling over a driver in Alexandria and claiming to be a police officer.

But the guy he stopped is a retired cop, and Alexandria Police say the real officer started asking questions when he was stopped on December 16th. The suspect then drove away in a dark blue Ford Crown Victoria -- a type of car commonly used by police.

Authorities say Steven Shifflett was arrested on a charge of impersonating a police officer and freed on bond.

Lieutenant John Crawford, an Alexandria Police spokesman, says Shifflett does NOT match the description of a police impersonator in Prince William County.

    STORY NUMBER II
Suspect Nabbed in Police Impersonation Case
    Friday February 25, 2005 12:26pm

Alexandria, Va. (AP) - A Charlottesville man was arrested on charges of pulling over a driver in Alexandria (website - news) and claiming to be a police officer, authorities said Friday.

Steven W. Shifflett, 51, was arrested at his home on Feb. 18 and charged with impersonating a police officer. He was later released on bond.

According to police, Shifflett was driving a dark blue Ford Crown Victoria - a type of car commonly used by police - when he made a predawn traffic stop on Seminary Road late last year. But the man he allegedly pulled over is a retired police officer who began asking questions, at which point the suspect drove away.

"It bothers us that this guy is a Charlottesville resident and he's in Alexandria at 5:30 in the morning on Dec. 16. Why? It begs the question why is this guy up in our area, and what's he been doing, and how many people has he stopped before?" said Lt. John Crawford, an Alexandria Police spokesman. Alexandria is about 110 miles northeast of Charlottesville.

Crawford said there were no other reported cases of police impersonation in Alexandria. But police are concerned about any unreported incidents, or similar crimes that might have happened elsewhere in the Washington, D.C., area.

"We're asking in this region, hey, take a look at this guy and tell us if you've got anything similar to this," Crawford said.

There have been unsolved police impersonation cases in Prince William Count (website - news) y in recent months, but Crawford said Shifflett does not match the description of that suspect.

Police: Man Pulled Over Retired Officer

    POSTED: 12:10 pm EST February 25, 2005

ALEXANDRIA, Va. -- A Charlottesville, Va., man is under arrest on charges of pulling over a driver in Alexandria and claiming to be a police officer.

    Steven Wayne Shifflett

But the guy he stopped is a retired officer, and according to Alexandria Police, the real officer started asking questions when he was stopped at 5:30 a.m. on Dec. 16. The suspect then drove away in a dark blue Ford Crown Victoria -- a type of car commonly used by police.

He was tracked down, and authorities said his name is Steven Shifflett, 51, and he faces charges of impersonating a police officer. Shifflett was later freed on bond.

Lt. John Crawford, an Alexandria Police spokesman, said this is the only reported case of police impersonation in that city. But they're concerned other cases might not have been reported, or might have happened elsewhere. Anyone with information about other instances should call police at (703) 838-4444.

Crawford also said Shifflett doesn't match the description of a suspect wanted in similar cases in Prince William.

Is Steven Shifflett some local celebrity or did the paper just put the guy's name in the headline for fun?
