    So-Cal Officers

Are there any Southern California officers that are able and willing to take me as a ride along? The reason I'm asking is that out of the ride alongs I've been on, it always seems like I have the unfortunate luck to get officers that hate ride alongs. I totally understand that some like them and some don't. Thus the reason I'm putting out a blanket question to those officers in So Cal that are willling =) I'm considering starting to apply at agencies again, and some ride alongs will help me out.

    PM if its possible.

Have you ask LAPD, Torrance, or Gardena PD for a ride-along? Some of the college students go for a ride-along to get a credit for the essay assignment to make up for the tests. You may try to ask above the three or you can ask South Gate PD which I'm not sure. You can go ahead, call, and ask. Good luck.

I've been with Torrance, a friend who is an officer with them took me.

The reason I'm not just asking depts for ride-alongs, is for the reasons I stated before.. I usually get an officer that hates ride alongs. Makes for a very uneasy night. They don't want to talk. I don't learn anything. And I end up going home wishing that I had gotten a different officer.

    Lasd

I did three with LASD and explained in the set-up phone call that I was interested in joining the Reserves. Wanted to be clear I wasn't "just" a citizen ride-a-long. I got 2 out of 3 excellent offers and on one shift the station gave me an FTO who spent the entire time teaching me stuff.

If I remember correctly, LAPD wont let you ride along unless you're in the hiring process. Meaning you've taken and passed the written test. LASD is a great department to do ride-a-long. As previously stated, make sure you let them know that you're interested in pursuing a career in law enforcement. One of the deputies that I did a ride-a-long with admitted to me that he wasn't happy to hear that he had a ride-a-long because he thought I was going to be another nosy citizen who watched too many episodes of CSI. He warmed up to me as soon as he got to know me. You should also try some of the smaller departments. Like I said before, make sure you tell them what you're there for. Good luck.

Did you go for just a 4 hour ride along or a full shift?

I did full shifts on each. Didn't intend to but was having such a blast they had to pull me out of the car just so they could go home.

You all are lucky! I haven't been on one yet.
Except that time I broke down and they gave me a ride home. But that doesn't count. :-)
