JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A 49-year-old man walked into police headquarters over the weekend and confessed to the stabbing death 30 years ago of a 16-year-old friend, authorities said.
Police said Anthony B. Williams has been jailed on a murder charge in the October 1974 death of Albert Holland, whose body was found near railroad tracks on Jacksonville's Eastside.
Williams talked about a crack cocaine problem and his desire to get treatment when he turned himself in to authorities, police said.
Before they could arrest him for the slaying, police needed solid evidence that he was responsible.
Jacksonville Sheriff's Office Sgt. Jim Parker, who heads the Cold Case team, said Tuesday that Williams, who was 18 at the time of Holland's slaying, brought detectives back to the scene after coming to the station Saturday.
The details of the crime described by Williams fit the initial findings of investigators, who had considered Williams a possible suspect in 1974, Parker said. Police did not release a motive for the slaying.
Williams was being held without bond on a murder charge in the Duval County Jail. His arraignment is scheduled for March 15. There was no information available on whether he had an attorney.
Fannie Holland, the victim's mother, said it makes her easier to know who was responsible for her son's death.
"I knew they were going to catch them someday," the mother said. "But I thought I would be gone. Thank God, I'm here to see this."
