Even though you have a GPS chip in your phone, it's pretty useless to tell you the truth. I personally think, and knowing with the experience I have in the area, that the Companys can locate you. The service just isn't used for the public, just for the corporation. Now if you had Nextel, you can take full advantage of the chip and use it for your personal use giving you directions or giving yourself your own location. Authorities may only locate you if they have E911. Well, even then, the location is down to 100's of yards, not pin-point.

I've not see a nextel out of the box that will do GPS. The ones I've seen is you have to subscribe to their service at an additional cost.

Yep, you are correct. We just bought a new round of phones here at work. They are all enabled with GPS, but to use the service we must subscribe. We chose not to as the two-way works just fine locating the guys. If they are ever in an emergency situation where we need to locate them by GPS, they better hope someone around them has it. :D

In life threatening situations, Telstra will assist pinning down the mobile phone signal of a known handset by triangulation. We have utilised it a few times out here in the sticks to find city folk who have come out here to suicide then change their mind and need help to become unlost.

In the UK 999 or 112 (European wide emergency number) from a landline provides the emergency operator with full subscriber details.

I'm pretty sure 112 is International. At least, it works here too.
