Gun control: Responses to "Grits and guns a dangerous mix," @issue, Jan. 21

    Diners need protection

The most compelling reason to allow carrying concealed weapons in restaurants is not to save others from a massacre, but to enable permit holders to use their guns to save themselves if they are attacked in or around the restaurant, or in the parking lot late at night.

Also, banning the carrying of concealed weapons in restaurants would make it almost impossible to routinely carry a gun legally and discreetly. Sure, you could draw and unload and lock your gun in your car's glove box while you're eating --- but what if you're traveling with friends, acquaintances or business associates and you don't want them to know you're armed? What if it would disturb them to see you handle your weapon in the car before you went into the restaurant together?

If you're fit to carry a gun in other public places in Georgia, including fast-food restaurants and shopping malls and on downtown sidewalks in the middle of a weekday, you should be allowed to carry it in any full-service restaurant.

I'm in the process of getting my graduate thesis published. It's was a long paper dealing with the counterfeiting of U.S. currency (domestically and overseas). I submitted the paper back in December '04, and I've been told the review for published materials in academic journals is very lengthy, so I probably won't hear from them for quite a while.
