    Now I have to rethink

I presented to the Montgomery County Police Chiefs last night. What a great bunch of officers. Very open, very welcoming. Interested in the work we are doing. In talking to one officer he asked me how long I had been at this and what was my impression of cops overall. I told him I have received so many touching and compassionate responses and letters from officers that I now know why police officers wear metal badges over their hearts. They have great big marshmallow hearts and they need the badges to protect them. He laughed and pulled his badge from his back pocket. He asked me what I thought that meant! I told him I would have to rethink my theory.

I am on the board of the Autism Society of America the Greater Philly Chapter. I present on the need for officers to know certian things about autism. Some very basics that protect officers and individuals alike. I give them the thumbnail version and provide them with information to take back to their officers. I also developed a communication board that fits into a citation booklet to aide in bridgeing a number of language barriers. More information on that can be found on my website www.dol.net/~srz This year every police officer in PA will receive this board and and information sheet during their mandatory training. Other police specific information on autism has been posted here or can be found at the ASA website www.asaphilly.org It is a free download.

All the chiefs were in suits. No uniforms at this meeting. I would guess that everyone had their badge in their back pocket. I just laughed. This man was lots of fun and really made sure I was comfortable in the meeting.
