    A note for officers/potential officers

Just a quick item that I learned today at work...

If you get out of your patrol car to write a ticket, ensure that you don't leave your ticket book on top of the patrol car when you drive off.

On a subsequent stop I realized I no longer had my ticket book. When I mentioned it to my cover officer, he said "I thought I saw a bunch of papers fly off of your car after that last stop". He later returned to the site of our previous stop and found my ticket book in the middle of the road. It was much flatter than it had previously been. The hundreds of cars that had run it over didn't do it any favors. And to make things better, all of the "officer" copies of the tickets I've written for the last couple of months were now blowing around on the street.

He picked most of them up for me, but I'm guessing some people are going to be getting out of tickets in the next month or so if they take me to court.

So now I am the proud owner of a whole bunch of very dirty and smashed ticket copies, and a very flat aluminum ticket book.

    I love this job!

Wasn't my ticket book but the last time I had traffic court I left the notebook with all my tickets on the car. Luckily I saw it fall off as I was leaving the court so it wasn't out there too long.

I've had a guy who watched one fly off my car bring it into the PD after I was sure it was long gone. I found out early on the same thing happens when you leave evidence on top of your car, it doesn't stay there for the entire ride...

I did that with the County cell phone the other day. We had to call it and follow my route to find it. Luckly, it was in the parking lot and no one had run over it yet.

We did a burglary a few years ago, One of the items recovered behind the store was a heavy cardboard box full of these little twists of white tissue paper. The officer that took it for evidence left it on the trunk as she drove away, and paper went everywhere.

Did I mention the burglary was at a jewelry store, and the owners stored loose diamonds in little twists of tissue paper?

We spent a LOT of time crawling around with flashlights that night. Luckily, there was no wind! Found them all too. 380K in diamonds.

I ran out of room in my trunk once and had to put some overflow evidence in my back seat. Unfortunately, the door didn't completely close. When I took a corner, one of the cases of beer hit the door and out it went, along with a case of vodka. My partner had the guy we had arrested in his car, so I had to get out and salvage what I could. I thought that was the worst...until I had to explain in court why the amount of evidence didn't match the inventory sheet we had done at the bar.

I left two tickets that were paper clipped together on the roof and luckily they slid off during my first turn. They were still in the middle of the road when I went looking for them. Mid shift has it's perks (no traffic on the streets).

I did the citation holder on the roof onto the street thing as well. I had to use pliers and a small hammer to get it to close again. That was 15 yrs ago and I intend to keep it as a momento when I retire.
