An alleged thief tricked into thinking he had won a competition found his only prize was to see police officers coming to arrest him.
The ruse was concocted by police, who could contact the Christchurch man by cellphone but needed his name and address in order to find him.
A 27-year-old man is due to appear in the Christchurch District Court charged with theft of a $1300 cellphone from a city shop.
Police allege the man stole the phone on Wednesday and then realised he needed a SIM (subscriber identity module) card and a battery to operate it.
The alleged thief took the phone to another shop in the same retail chain and bought the SIM card before buying the battery at another outlet.
By this time, the retailer had discovered the phone had been stolen.
However, the SIM card bought by the man had been inserted into another cellphone, so police had the number they needed to contact the man.
He was called and told he had won a competition by buying the SIM card. However, his name and address were needed so his prize could be posted to him.
Armed with the vital information, police then called around and arrested the "lucky" winner.
Senior Sergeant Blair Telford said he was pleased with the quick thinking by the retail group and his staff.
"Police and retailers working together have solved this quickly," Telford said.
