I assisted another officer on a DUI the other week. Guy was a prick. He had a suspended OL and when the other officer went up to the car the first time, he didn't smell any alcohol. Th guy said he hadn't had anything to drink. Well, when he gets the guy out to sign the ticket and the suspension form, the smell hits him. He tells the guy that since he didn't smell it at first and he won't be driving anywhere anyways (tow truck coming for the car) that he won't try for DUI but asks why the guy lied about drinking. The guy states "What difference does it make if I lied to you? I don't want you in my personal business and how much I drink is personal". Well, that changes everything. Starts Field Sobriety. Guy fails bad, says he had 3 glasses of wine. Also states that he's married with kids and and only graduated high school. Well he's arrested. The next day when I flip on my laptop, I have a message from the officer (he's mids I'm evenings) saying that on top of the DUI, when he got to the magistrate's office he told the magistrate that he is single and has 2 college degrees. When confronted he admits lying to the magistrate, who promptly charges him with perjury, which is up to 10 years in the state penn. I have never seen anyone talk themself into that much trouble.
