FWIW, used squads are usually in sad mechanical shape. After all, there's a reason they got rid of it. In Vics the PI version gets dual exhaust and better suspension, and usually 3.55 gears. As for the Impala, I have no idea, although I imagine it's along the same line. I've only been in one Police Impala, and it ain't a family sedan.
Pretty much the same for both
-Beffier Suspension and brakes
-Geared for good acceleration/Highwayspeed/economy
-Dual Exhaust
-Dif computers with no speed limiter
ect....

if you do get a used CV PI, i wouldn't suggest jumping it. those things hurt when you land.

Impalas are only avalible in V6 where the Vic is a V8 ...
I beg to differ about the overall dependability of the Vic ... when kept up to date mechanically you can really get some good use outta them. As far as I know departments really only get rid of squads because of undesirable mileage (large cities). The Vics are built tough and can take more than the PD can give them ... unless its a tree in a ditch *lol* My friend owns a retired '93 and it still runs like new. Granted, on many of the earlier models the transmission is the first to go.

He may be referring to the older Caprice Classic from the mid-90's (there was an Impala from the mid-90's that was very much similar to it, rear-wheel drive, 4dr V8). They were equipped with small-block V8's. Some came equipped with a slightly detuned LT1 from the Corvette & Camaro/Firebird's. You are correct though, the newer Impala's are V6's.Originally posted by vbgecko

Just out of curiosity, if you didn't know what the difference was, why were you interested in buying one?Originally posted by smith

I just bought a 98' Vic from the Municiple auction. This is what it has. 4.6 V-8, interceptor chip (boosts compression ratio), oil cooler, big *** brakes (4-wheel disk), sway bars you can't fit your hand over:D , high speed tires, dualies, spot light, high watt interior dome light, better suspention.
If you're interested in buying one I suggest doing it. These are not normal cars, you understand. these are heavy duty vehicles that will take whatever you dish out at them. As long as you buy it from a Municiple auciton and it was a former police car, then you know that it was taken care of very well. I bought mine froma guy who was selling them outright but purchased them from the auction. I could'nt think of any other 1998 that ran like new and only costed $5000!
sounds NICE!!!... i wouldnt mind getting one but i dont have license yet...heh...and i need a job:D

How could a chip boost the compression ratio?
I was curious of the same thing. I think all any sort of 'chip' on those cars does is eliminate the speed limiter that's in place of regular 'civilian' cars. Only way to change compression ratio is to use heads with a smaller combustion chamber, mill the heads, or use a head gasket with a different thickness. Raising compression would also call for using higher-octane fuel, as well.Originally posted by txinvestigator1

Yes, my question was sort of rhetorical. Compression RATIO, ration the key word, is a factor of cylinder volume (bore and stroke). Which is completely a mechanical function.
Chips remove speed limiters and can effect the timing, but have nothing to do with CR.
Opps. Yeah, something like that. I was told that the engine itself isn't beefed up mechanically but it does have a chip that puts it under a little more pressure.
A computer chip or a reprogramer can alter the air fuel mixture but certainly not compression ratio.
