    police jobs

Would anyone know of any small towns (population under 10,000) in the midwest hiring police officers? We have already checked out all of the job sites we can find on the internet. The thing is I know there are an awful lot of these smaller places that only advertise locally in newspapers rather than online. Any leads would really be appreciated!! Thanks!

You can possibly locate police department web sites that may be of help at either of the below web sites:

    http://www.officer.com/

    OR

    http://www.ih2000.net/ira/ira.htm

    * I'd be willing to bet some small town agencies that you seek MAY have a web site published that may have the information you seek! Some of your local LE agencies, who have a PD web site, MAY also have links to other area agencies.

    * I would also consider contacting, if in your area, your local/regional police academies. Commonly departments post job opportunities at a lot of academies. (Small agencies too!) OR, if any colleges in your area offer crimnal justice/law enforcement/police science type courses, often times they have job placement services at the colleges available to students!!!

    * Finally, small agencies often don't have a lot of money they can budget towards running employment ads but I am certain they do run ads from time to time. I'd find out your region's most popular newspapers and keep an eye on the Sunday paper. Commonly, the Sunday paper IS the largest paper during the week and when most everyone seems to prefer running their ads.

Otherwise, not sure what else you could other than driving to each small agency in your area and asking questions.

Click on the states on the right that your interested in to see more departments

Or you could just call the departments and ask....

Define Mid West. Sometimes I hear people talk about being from the mid west and they are from Indiana. *shrug* Not that there's anything wrong with Indiana...

Thanks for your replies! We've crawled all over the internet and I think found most of the best sites for police employment and found a handful of possibilities. I've also taken on the VERY time consuming task of searching the classifieds on the net. Just drives me nuts that there's probably the perfect job out there NOT anywhere on the internet and we'll miss it! As for definition of the midwest, well I guess mine is pretty broad!! Basically we're looking as far west as Colorado, east to Indiana. We're not ruling out Ky. Our first choice states would be IL, IN, IA, MO, NE, WI. Here's another question- I've always thought of the rural areas of Missouri as being low cost of living, especially taxes, but a friend tells us that they have outrageous personal property tax. I've never heard this before, can anyone tell me if it's true??? Also, if someone is IL certified with 25 years experience in law enforcement, how are some of these other states as far as accepting out of state certification?

You are likely going to need to contact each state about this issue. Some states do take into account someone else's previous LE training. Most likely though, I am sure there is some sort of government agency or commission who oversees the licencing of their state officers. I suspect you might have to take some sort of state licensing test and whatever else they may require to get your peace officer license.

I am sure you can find each state's licensing office through most any state's web sites on the internet with a little searching.
