What other jobs are out there?

Hey everyone. I'm new to this forum and have a question that anyone can answer, although I'm looking towards the 'older' members and those already in a LE position. First, a little background:

I'm a senior at the University of Pittsburgh - Bradford and my major is Administration of Justice. It's about that time for me to start searching for jobs, but I've come to the realization that I do not want to work as an officer or as a guard. I interned with a moderately sized police force and found that although the people were exciting and interesting, the job was not. I also interned at a Federal Penn and found that I hated it... the idea of getting shanked turned me off.

I've looked into probation and parole positions and those look interesting and I've looked at private investigation jobs, which seem too shady to me.

What I'm wondering is: Do you know of any jobs out there that I have over-looked? Perhaps community based and dealing with the public? I'm trying to think outside of the box with this... a suggestion given to me by my neighbor (who is a trooper for n.y.s.) was to work in the insurance field in a fraud position. Any other suggestions are greatly appreciated.

My advice would be to not sell yourself short. You may be qualified for a lot of law enforcement jobs, including with some departments and agencies that you may think are out of your reach.

Apply anywhere you think you would like to work, whether you think you are qualified or not. Let the hiring department or agency make that determination for you.

There is nothing inherintely shady about PI work. For 8 years I made a great living doing it. In that time I worked hundreds of cases, and among them I:

Solved many crimes and presented cases to the police that were then prosecuted.

Revealed the offender and often gained confessions for businesses that had internal theft or employee misconduct.

Located children who had been taken illegally by abusive parents.

Documented cases of failure to obey court ordered child custody requirements.

Documented cases of unsafe living conditions for children. On 2 occasions I gained evidence for CPS to remove children from dangerous homes.

Located assets of people hiding them from court ordered judgements.

Performed Executive Dossiers for businesses and law firms conducting due diligence on potential new executives, several times discovereing lies and criminal backgrounds.

    Verified cheating spouses.

Documented cases of people cheating workers comp or personal injury insurance companies.

    located missing persons.

performed electronic eavesdropping countermeasure sweeps. once for a large sports team in Dallas that was starting contract negotiations.

click here to see how we worked a case of animal rights activists terrorists activities.

I have worked criminal defense cases where I built evidence to both aquit an innocent, and to show the defense attorney that his client should plead out.

I have turned down cases too. It is all a matter of the ethics of the investigator

A lot of states, mine included, require LE experience in order to be licensed for PI.

Like TX, I have also conducted Private Investigations for several years and found it to be very rewarding work. So much so that I will probably be doing it full time in the near future. As for shadiness, you will probably find that it varies from state to state. Here in Illinois, they will not give just anyone a license. Good luck.

Other positions are out there for investigators. Large PI firms, or a busy small firm, do the kind of work TX described. Govt agencies have limited commission armed or non-commisiond non-armed investigators. Most are with regulatory comliance, industrial safety, fraud, and professional licensing; they investigate and recommend adminstrative penalties on violators.
