Just finished the book called "True Blue" by Sgt. Randy Sutton. He organized a book where officers can write in and tell stories of things they have encountered. The stories are put into five categories named "The Beat," "War Stories," "Officer Down," "Line of Duty," and "Ground Zero."
I highly recommend this book. Everytime I turned the page, I just kept wanting to read more and more. I would finish one officer's story and then be like...okay just one more. I think this book benifits everyone, but especially non-LEO's. It lets them see what officers deal with day in and day out. It will also let them see that not every officer is just some prick wanting to ruin your day. I think it will open a lot of people's eyes on law enforcement.
Here is some qoutes from the book that I really liked:
"What these stories have in common is that they define the "line of duty": the line that seperates cop from civilian, the line that no cop can retreat from, where every cop makes his stand no matter what it costs him."
"But if there's anything I can do for those who are in danger, who are afraid, let them call me and I will be there. My phone number is 911."
"While there may be some chest thumping and service rivalry, when one law enforcement officer needs help there is never hesitation. All of us know there are times when someone from another agency will be our only backup because our agency backup is miles away."
(I really like this one because it is another reason I want to go into law enforcement. No matter what, someone is willing to help out their brother even if they don't even know them. Its the type of person they are and part of the job they got into.)
"Dan's death taught me that you can love this job and bring honor to the badge but you must never forget you have a family at home waiting for you. You must never forget to laugh and enjoy life. You must always respect the men and women you work with because you may not see each other tommorow. And you must remember that you are a human being and remember to stay human."
"She looked to me, to the uniform I wear and the badge I pin on myself each day, for help and hope."
"The two suspects were given bracelets and made guests of the city."
(Muhahahahaha)
"One never knows what impact we, as police officers, can have on someone's life unless we take the time to show we truly care."
"Those in public safety who do not hesitate to serve when they are needed. They just ask, "When and where do you want me?""
(This qoute is so true. As I read the stories of the people who responded to the 9/11 attacks, I was amazed. These people ran in while people were running out. When off-duty officers heard the call of America under attack, they ran home, got their gear and headed to Ground Zero to offer help wherever needed. The qoute above speaks so much truth.)
This is truely a great book and I will recommend it to anyone. It really opened up my eyes in a lot of stuff that goes on in this world. Enjoy the qoutes, I know they will stick with my for a long time.
Mike
