Why LEO's don't need to be 1st Responders...........

OK............so today is my second day in a 48 hour First Responder course. I need the cert for my Intermediate Certification, and I figured it would come in handy for all the med calls we are called to assist on. Anyway,I concider myself a fairly smart person, but I also like to keep things simple. If someone is laying on their back,I will tell you they are laying on their back. I won't make some s**t up and say,"Well,I found that person in the SUPINE position." Come on. I've worked with medics alot over the years, and I've never heard most of the words I have heard in this class. I won't ask someone if they have their Body Substance Isolation equipment on. I'll ask,"where in the hell is your gloves?" Maybe it's just me,but this ain't rocket science. There is no reason to make it harder than it has to be.

All those fancy terms come in handy when you're calling the docs on the radio or with a phone patch. They actually do speak like that. But docs have always been a little odd.

Yep I'm like you Ghost. No fancy words just use plain talk. My department goes to crew calls and we are first responder most of the time. I have just the basics in first aid and CPR so I'm there basically to calm them down and reassure them they are OK.

Mine is a little deeper than that. I would NEVER be an EMT. But I've been on some nasty scenes that I had a hard time dealing with. Most notably an MVA where a 4 y/o little girl was killed. It would have helped my emotional stabillity greatly afterwords if I could have done SOMETHING. The end results would have been the same, but it would have been easier on me knowing I did all I possibly could to save her. Instead, all I could do was watch her bleed out.

NO, then you would just wonder if what you did was wrong and then be thinking you could have caused her death.

Been there done that! Did CPR on an ol lady - grossest thing i've ever had to do. And it didn't work.

The adults don't bother me. None of the times I've done CPR have ever worked, and the truth is it rarely ever does. But,with the kids you always want to go that extra mile. As far as coping though,I guess we all do it a little different.

The first day of my first responder course a few years ago, the instructor says to us: "You will learn a lot of important things in this class, and forget some of them, but I hope you do remember just one thing: ABC

    Ambulance Before Cop."

I am an EMT and I am very grateful for my skills. At least you are going through first responder. When I went through the state police academy, the first aid course was a joke. Ok, so we are law enforcement officers, but something as simple as lifting one's head up to clear the airway I think isn't asking too much. If they're slumped over the steering wheel with a blocked airway, I think it's silly for an officer to sit there and let them die before the medics arrive. It is one good thing for our department to be a dual agency because all of the officers are minimum first responder trained. We have 16-18 EMT's out of 68 officers. Don't get me wrong, some hate to respond to medical calls, but at least they know what to do even though they dislike doing it.

ahh well i give you congrats and hope you stick with it. I never use all the fancy medical terms, except in radio, and run sheets. But i have to say that a first responder's course will make a diffrence, i think it is important for LEO and FFs to have first responder cert. because it saves lives, if for anything but that. When it takes 1-5+ mins for a ambulance to respond, every second counts.

I am more than willing to move furniture, calm relatives and give the medics directions.

Actually , we have stanfard first aid and infant/adult CPR. I am 0/2 on CPR ( both elderly) And we carry AED's.
