No and I can't fingerprint that rock they threw through your window either. Besides I don't drink coffee or cappucino.
right.. same thing here. if its a fatal accident on the highway and city rolls up on it, they would help but turn it over to the state police as they take care of the state highways. if something happened in a park and county was sent there, they would turn it over to a park ranger. BUT, any and all these departments could handle the incidnet properly , make any arrest needed, or enforce any laws on the others jurisdiction in marion county/indianapolis.Originally Posted by FloridaLEO

So are troopers the ones that patrol the rural part of the states or are they mainly highway cops?

'here' they do highway patrol. I 'think' they also do the unincorporated areas, but I'm not 100% on that.

Here our sheriff's maintain the jails, courts and handle all civil complaints and private property disputes. They also do traffic, handle calls and run the drug task force unit.
The cities handle everything inside the city limits..
Our state police is a full service department that does everything including investigations, traffic, accidents, and handles calls except for civil matters. We do have 4 Freeway Traffic Posts, Detroit, Oak Park, Flint, and Taylor. The other posts handle the freeways and all county roads.
The major difference between the troops, deps and city officers in my county is that when a officer or deputy take a complaint they then turn it over to the Detectives. The state police take a call from start to finish, doing investigation, followup, paper, arrest, and the trial. The others don't do that, as they give it to the DB.
Actually , I am not a county officer as we don't have countywide departments ( yet). Maryland has them and maybe someday we will. In my county we have The State Police, One City PD and 14 other municipal PD's I work for a regional department that covers 9 municipalities over 80 square miles.
As CTDL92 said, the state police have statewide powers to enforce ALL of the various state lwas but they can't enforce a local ordinance violation ( curfew, open container in public, etc which are enacted by a specific municipality). Another kicker is the interstate system. We have about 4 miles of interstate highway in my jurisdiction. If ANYTHING happens on the highway, it is the responsibility of the state police. Accident, road rage etc. If I happen to be out on the interstate and see a vio of any kind, I can (and will) enforce it. A lot of Marylanders mistakenly believe that municipal pd's dont have authority on the interstate, they will even pass by me when I am in a marked car !! Sign here please.

here in Indiana. all certified police officers have state wide jurisdiction. we can make an arrest anyplace. the problem arrises when you dont have other jurisdictions paper work. some places arrest for certain things while others only give tickets which presents problems also. since we dont know what others policys are we dont medle to much in other peoples kitchen but you can catch us poaching on eachother from time to time.
State Police- has the task of policing all state propertys including highways as well as being the primary police force in many rural areas but not limited to. they also are able to work/take runs in the big city IE Indianapolis. I think there are around 700 State Troopers in Indiana. they have there own crime lab and own detectives and own acd and own swat teams.
City Police - obviously patrols mainly in the city. Indianpolis Police is the largest Department in the state with around 1600 and another 100-200 reserves. they have mounted, cycles, scuba, copter, swat, homocide ect. they have the highest officer to citizen ratio and pretty much the most crime riddle area in the state.
County Sheriff - works the county, but as with city they cross the borders into the city and vice versa. they have road officers around 600 here in Marion County which is Indianapolis. they also are in charge of civil warrants and the jail. they share with IPD a property room, jail, and crime lab as well as having all the same divisions like swat, cycles ect.
Park Rangers - are county wide in Indianapolis/Marion county there are 214 Parks in Marion county over lapping city. they have Narcotics dogs, vice, reserves, and merrit officers numbering 28. they also will take city runs or county runs depending on where they are and where the run is.
Housing Police - takes all the section 8 housing i dont know how many there are. they like the Rangers are county wide and over lap. there are about 20 housing officers
enviormental police - there are two, they handle all things related to illegal dumping, condemed houses things along that line. although they can make traffic stops if what the person is doing is in dangering the public, they do not take regular runs but can act if someones saftey is at risk.
that is about the size of it, there are things i missed but you get the idea.
if you dial 911 in Indianapolis you could get a city cop, and a park ranger, or a county officer and a housing officer or any combination.
when Jake Laird got shot and killed on the scene where state police, indianapolis police, housing police, Beech grove city police, Park Rangers, and even a university police officer or two. i think it works best this way, if you need a cop here anyone of these officers has the power to do what is needed. they dont have to call another department to help if they dont need to or want to.

i left that part out, it is the same here. state can enforce local ordinances. i dont think,,,,,? if they had an ordinance book for the county or city they were in they might be able to. i dont know why they wouldnt be able to.Originally Posted by mcsap
