It will depend on the state. Generally the District Attorney (Prosecuting Attorney in Missouri) is responsible for prosecutong criminal cases.

The County Attorney is the legal advisor for the county and provides necessary legal representation to the county government and county office holders in civil actions etc.

    Hope this is understandable.

In Dallas there is only a District Attorneys Office that prosecutes criminal cases for violations of state law.

In Nueces County there is a District and County Attorney. The DA does Felony Cases and the CA does Misdemeanor cases.

DA is the Prosecutor for the State.
County Atty is just that; the County's Atty

Out here, there are county courts and district courts. The DA's work in both. The districts are groups of counties, and the Deputy DAs are usually assigned to specific counties to prosecute.
