...because I have to nap before my first shift tonight! Graveyard on a Friday night...baptism by fire I guess. This isn't an FTO ride...this is basically a ride along in full uniform. Mostly an observational role, but I can jump into the fray if need be, cover suspects, watch primary's back, etc. I am so nervous! I've ridden so much, but this is the first time with a gun/badge/vest/AUTHORITY. ANy advice for the rookie??!:eek:

From one rookie to another...Listen to your FTO/Officer. Keep your ears open and ask what ever questions you have. It's OK to be nervous. It's natural. Don't get too overwhelmed with things. Some things like radio traffic will be coming fast. And you'll quickly learn that the academy didn't teach you nothing but basics and not a great deal "real world" things. So 121, have fun...and be a sponge and soak up all you can.

Look and listen. Situational awareness - 360 degrees, also above your head and what's at your feet. Watch the hands. Words are words, but behavior can be dangerous. Listen to the violators, do they tell the same story as the behavior you just observed?

Always check your 6. If your FTO/partner is doing something keep looking at your surroundings don't get lost in the moment! Poo Poo can hit the fan real fast!!

From a FTO perspective.... look and listen first .... Then ask questions.... Not the other way around!!!!
I sure hope you'll end up with a cool FTO.... Don't annoy him with too many questions on the first shift... but take your time to look and listen....
