We just had a case here a few days ago that is similar. The mother wanted to run into a convenience store to get milk at 0100. She left her sleeping 2 year old child in the car, left the car running and went into the store. About 2 minutes later, another customer said "Hey, isn't that your car?". Turns out that some guy got into her car (car running, keys left in it) and stole it. In the process, he also abducted the sleeping child. The mother called us in hysterics and it ended up being a multijurisdictional search. An AMBER alert was in the process of being issued, and the helicopter was being called out. The suspect, bless him, must have had a conscience because he called 911 to report a suspicious vehicle that he had parked right across the street from my department. The police arrived, and the child was found, still sleeping, safe and sound in the vehicle.
The mother was so distraught that the bosses chose not to charge her with a crime because they felt she learned her lesson and suffered enough.
Ok, she made many foolish mistakes - having her child out and about at 1 in the morning, leaving the car running, keys in it, leaving the child unattended - and the door unlocked!!!, and driving around the worst neighborhood on that side of the city. Well, I guess the bosses have their reasons.
