Retired Troy cop foils carjacking in Detroit
A retired Troy police officer fought off a group of five men trying to carjack him Sunday morning in Detroit, shooting two of them as they tried to pull him out of his SUV.
Both wounded suspects were hospitalized Sunday at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, one in critical condition and the other in serious condition. Three other suspects in the carjacking attempt were arrested by Detroit police, and all five could be charged today.
Detroit police declined to identify the retired Troy officer or the men arrested in connection with the incident.
Police Sgt. Eren Stephens said the retired officer runs a security company and was making his rounds near a construction site about 4:30 a.m. when he pulled up to the intersection of Vernor and Cabot. Five men with knives approached his Saturn Vue and demanded the vehicle.
As the men began to pull him out of the car, the former officer grabbed his gun and fired several shots. Two of the suspects were hit, and the other three carried them away.
Stephens said the victim tried to call police to report the incident, but his cell phone was dead. He then drove to the 4th (Fort-Green) Precinct, forgetting it had closed, before deciding to return to the scene and wait for police there.
Police questioned the man Sunday morning. Because he is a retired police officer, Stephens said, they believed he had a permit allowing him to have the weapon in his car.
Around 5 a.m., one of the suspects called for an ambulance from a pay phone at Cahalan and Mullane -- about a half-mile from the shooting. The men said the two who were shot had been injured during a drive-by shooting involving a rival gang. But police quickly linked them to the carjacking attempt.
