Anyone ever been a special deputy?

For those who dont know what it is or its called something else in your area, Im talking about the non-licensed officers that watch events such as concerts, fairs, wedding receptions etc. just as kind of a security thing. Watching for minor drinkers etc. and what not.

Im thinking about applying for the position to get some hands on experience, kinda get my feet wet. Just wanted to hear some opinions on this. Im sure most leo's look at it as a pee-on job, but hey w/e. It pays pretty damn good too for part time, $15/hr.

yeah I was suprised when I talked with the sheriff on the phone about it how much they make. The special deputies work for the sheriffs department, they're different from the CSOs that work for the pd, although Im hopefully going to be a cso next summer, but I wouldnt mind making $15 bucks an hour to watch people for 5 hours...

I signed up ( and was sworn in) as a member of the local school district's School Police. Full Police powers if needed but all charges are to be handled by the regualr pd that covers the area.

They pay $20 an hour with a mandatory minimum of 4 hrs pay for sporting events , dances etc.

Around here they call it a Police Auxiliary program. Most of them I know are strictly volunteer though.

I've never heard of it down here. For large events such as games (NFL), concerts, etc, the local PD's are hired off-duty (in uniform) anywhere from $20 - $30 an hour. Large events such as music concerts can also have plain clothes security such as Rock Solid, inc. and others. They are regular security officers with no type of police powers. They are usually not armed either. We have many security companies in TN. Some a lot better than others. Depending on the size of the event, local LEO's are usually hired, especially at the NFL games. GO TITANS! :D

All my deputies are "special". :D

We have off-duty cops that help with special events.
We have special police, but they are mostly traffic control - ex: busy Sunday mornings at certain churches, etc.

Where i am police are not allowed to work security jobs as it is considerd a conflict of interest. If someone is found moonlighting as a security guard they are told to desist immediately or face disiplinary charges and possible dismisal from the police service.

which is basically what happened to Tankus.... :( ...and damn the money was good!!

I have a friend working for Toronto PD.... They are doing what they call "pay-duties".
They can be ask to work on traffic control for a contractor working to fix a street( I even think it mandatory for a contractor to hire a cop prior to do any repairs on any city roads) or they can do jobs for private party and things like that.
All paid cash and using the departement cars, radios and uniform.

May be SORMJ can give us more details about this.
It is the only town that I know,in Canada, that is authorizing such a thing.

Again is it an invasion into private security sector or is it OK for LEO to offer their services like that?

Its more of a rent-a-cop thing, but thats not what they're called. Yeah they wear sheriffs deputy uniforms, just no firearm etc. Our town is only about 23,000 people so we dont have huge concerts or reasons for higher security. We have this place called "The Jungle" that has local bands play there, special deps watch those events. They watch the bowling alley on the weekends etc. I take that back some of them now are actually doing security now at some hotels in the area. They also do street dances as well..

Im just waiting for them to send me the application in the mail so I can get it in asap...

Aren't they just the Jail keepers???? It looks to me that they are the deputies working unarmed at the local Jail operated by the Sherrif Dept.

Why would they wear the uniform and be considered as fully swarn officer without the handgun? It creates confusion in the public mind... No?
