All applicants seeking to join the police in England and Wales will be asked to declare their sexual orientation from October. The question will be posed as part of the anonymous equal opportunities form filled out by would-be officers.
They will be asked to tick a box saying whether they are heterosexual, bisexual, gay, lesbian or would "prefer not to say".
Home Office officials said there was no obligation to tick any box and any information given was confidential.
Three police forces - Bedfordshire, Lancashire and Leicestershire - have already been including the sexual orientation question in staff surveys since earlier this year.
The move was backed by the Gay Police Association. The organisation said it was supporting sexual monitoring because the difficulty of quantifying levels of gay officers in the past had led to their marginalisation.
Strategic director Sian Lockley said: "It's not about asking people who they have slept with and it's not about quotas - we do not want a certain percentage of the workforce to be gay."
She said senior officers from the Association of Chief Police Officers were continually asking: "How many of you are there?" and why no one knew.
"We don't know because we don't ask the question," she said.
"Positive action has to be backed up with facts and figures - you can then show why positive action is needed. If we already do gender and race monitoring how do you defend not doing sexual orientation monitoring? There is no difference."

i dont think that should matter... It doesnt matter if they are straight or gay.. as long as they do there job, thats all that matters

Who cares your orientation? If you do your job well, that's all that matters. And we shouldn't be monitoring ppl so they get the job or don't just because of their "orientation." You SHOULD (theoretically) be monitored on your skills.

We monitor people all the time...... we monitor male vs. female officers, white officers vs. black officers vs. hispanic officers... why not gay vs. straight?
I can't wait till you guys have the first discrimination case where a gay, asian, female officer is accused of writing a discrimanatory ammounts of tickets to straight, white males. :D
