Not enough room here for the whole story, but the long and short of it is that I went waaaaaaaaaaay out on a limb for a young lady. The B/S meter didn't go off when she gave me the usual sob story and I took a chance on her. She was teetering right on the edge of gang activity and all that goes with it.
Being able to get a driver's license was a huge thing for her. I had her dead to rights on a MIP/Public Intox/Disorderly/Poss. of Paraphrenalia one night. I did some follow up and made the decision to go to bat for her with the court and youth authorities. Was able to convince the judge to defer charges pending completion of treatment, etc. That was about a year ago and I kept an eye on her afterwards.
I went to the local HS graduation at the invite of some of the kids I've helped out and gotten back into school. She came up to me with a huge grin waving the diploma and told me she earned a small scholarship to the local CC.
I think it was two weekends ago that she came flying out her house as I was walking by. Gave me a huge hug and while crying kept thanking me over and over and then showed me her new license. It was definite feel good moment.
Not sure it was the most rewarding, but it was recent and still fresh in the memory banks. We don't win many, but every now and then you get to see that your actions have made a difference in someones life.
Never be afraid to make a difference
first was being able to work with my dad before his retirement and death. second is staying alive and being married 32 years.being able to help kids when they needed me most.delivering a baby, over 25 years it is hard to pick one thing.taking 2 boys away from abusive parents and staying involved in their lives until hs graduation.being classified as a expert witness.given an award for speaking at schools.and outlasting all those bastards who were snitches
1. doing CPR and the guy lived.
2. sending a dope dealer to prison, later meeting this young person clean and sober with a job, a future, and getting a sincere "thank you".
3. sending two career felons to prison for life after they tried to murder two cops I worked with.
4. recommending two offficers for an award for heroism and saving a person's life, and knowing they got the award.

Creeper Cop
long story cut short......
was called out to a violent assault one night, i was the shift supervisor and unusually working alone. i arrived first on scene and was directed to a large parkland area across the street from where the address was.
i found a man laying in a pool of blood, he had been severely beaten and had really bad head injuries. he was convulsing, and then he stopped breathing. i called for an ambulance to attend priority one, and cleared his airway and started EAR. i managed to get him breathing again, but had to keep scooping the congealing blood out of the back of his throat to stop it blocking and stopping him breathing....
once the ambulance officers arrived, they took over.... and i directed my crew on scene securing, evidence gathering etc etc....
on moving the guy, due to his head injuries he became violent and started swinging punches, he punched me to the head a couple of times, and layed out an ambo....he stopped breathing again and his heart stopped so i assisted them en-route to the hospital by doing CPR whilst one ambo was driving and the other administering whatever it was they did...
the end result was that we caught the bad guys and they were convicted after a long and drawn out trial...the victim was left head injured and paralised, unable to speak and requires 24/7 care.
about a year afterwards, i went to visit my parents who live in augusta, a three hour drive down the south of western australia.....it was about midnight and i was down at the town jetty fishing with my dad.
a man walked up to me, and said "your that copper arent you?"
me..."which copper would that be? (the suspicious meter was off the scale)
him..."you were the one that saved my brother johns life and put the bastards in jail"
at this he grabbed me in a big bear hug, (i thought he would break my ribs) kissed me on the cheek and with tears in his eyes said "i cant thank you enough"
now my dad was watching this.....and he and i havent always seen eye to eye.....he looked at me also with tears in his eyes and said "im proud of you"
im not sure which was more rewarding.....a heartfelt thanks from a stranger...or approval from my father....

Attempt Suicide subject that was a known alcoholic I have dealt with several times. At his mother's house with a 12 in blade to his stomach. I get there, draw down and bark orders.
He stands, with that look in his eyes and raises the knife in the air over his head, facing me. Maybe 12-15 feet away.
Maybe 1lb from pulling one off into him. He throws the knife in my direction, I slide off to the side. It goes by, missed by at least about 8 feet. I holster and hose 'em w/ OC.
He goes down like a baby. Gets committed for 72 hours, thats all.
With training and common sense taken into account, I should have squeezed a few off, dunno why I didn't it.
We talk about a month later, realizing what he had almost done when his mother tells him what happened. He stated he never even knew I was there, only knew someone was there and he wanted them to leave. He thanked me for not killling him, and being there so he wouldn't kill himself.
He died about 2 yrs ago from Cirrhosis of the liver.

There are rewards that go with the job???? ;)
One time the Department of the Navy gave me I think a 25.00 check for hooking up a deserter. But it went to general fund cuz I can't except rewards :p
Would they give that 25 bucks to any citizen that finds one?

Whilst waiting for my wife to finish work, I spotted a foreign looking couple running around in circles with a very well to do english woman running back and forth between them and phone kiosk. Being nosey I walked over to see whats up then I see a 3 year old boy going blue. Dad holds up a packet of polo mints and points to his throat then to the kid.
One firm slap on the kids back, out pops polo like a +p+ 9mm. Kid starts to go a healthy shade of pink.
Wife comes out of work. We go home.
If it weren't for my emergency life support training, I'd be one of thoses running around like a headless chicken. :D

What about those that have to do both?
BMW R1200RT, the flying, heated 300kg armchair.
Yeah they have a reward program at least they did last year.
Yeah they pay to get their wayward children back :D
whats the problem then? Its only gratuity if its specifically for LEO, with the intent of getting more personal service.
Oh well, so much for supplementing our low salaries :D
