About a year ago I got called to a local construction site for 2 workers who fell off the building. Nasty, nasty scene. One guy is screaming bloody murder, has a bone sticking out of his leg,and in general is in bad shape. I yell at the other construction guys to hold him down to keep him from moving, and instruct them on the C-spine which they try their best to do. The other guy was DRT. He landed sideways on a 2 foot wall and busted his heart open on impact. Of course I didn't know the extent of his injuries, but I had to try and save him. A SRO that I know was in the area and heard the call, and with his help we start CPR and bag the guy. EMS shows up and we load them up and go to the ER,but the one guy is long gone. I came back about an hour later to get some information for the report. I'm talking to the foreman and he says that some of his crew wants to talk to me. I look over and there's about 5 guys standing around. I had just told the foreman that the one guy didn't make it,and he told his guys when we walked over to them. I was thinking that I was going to have to fight them for a minute cause they got so upset. Then, one by one,all of those big, burly construction workers hugged me and thanked me for all that I had done or tried to do to save their friends. That was a very emotional experience, and I will remember it always.

But it still hurts to know that I only saved one.
Lead me not into temptation.......someone talks me into enough sh!t as it is. .

I was asked to put something together for an officer I've been working with recently on disability awareness for officers and tools for parents to use to provide information to first responders when it's not a crisis. I showed this to a friend who said "Every officer should read this and know they are appreciated in this way." I think we, the public, rarely take the time to say thank you to you, the police officers in our area.

Here is what I wrote. I hope you know it is sincere.

I respect him as a police officer
I honor him as a veteran
I am impressed with the depth and breadth of his knowledge, experience and kindness
I am amazed by his optimism after 25 years of service, seeing the worst there is to see in humanity
I am grateful to him for going above and beyond in his commitment to our community
I am touched by his compassion for the least, the last and the forgotten in our society.
In short I admire the man.

    Susan
