    The Last Gunfight

Seen the movie, The Shootist? John Wayne is dying from cancer and as oppose to dying from it, goes out with one last great gun fight, doing something of a public service?

What's the reality of that? We do, of course, have those who want to commit suicide by forcing the police to shoot them, but other than that, of the good going out in a blaze of glory as it might be?

I have known old army officers who drove their corvettes very fast. Now, it may have been that, dying of cancer, they didn't think they would be around to pay the ticket or they hoped for a better way out.......and I have known pilots who where a crash would have been more preferrable....but they ran out of time. In any event, even faced with a terrible slow death of cancer, suicide is not an easy approach.

So is the last gunfight, the public service, a reality?

    >how is a gunfight a public service?

Refer to The Shootist where the hero sets up three bad guys (an old crook, a miserable mean man, and an up and coming gunfighter) and takes them all out.

But that is the silver screen, not reality. But does such occassionally occur in reality? I don't know; the closest I've heard of is someone taking out a few lawyers who think they can twist the law to their maximum advantage.

But beyound that.........unknown. Further, it is always debatable of who is the bad guy. The lawyer who successfully defends his client who has robbed widows and orphans is technically not crook and since his client was found not guilty, neither is he. There is the technical of the matter but then again, to many, there is the felt reality with many wishing of someone taking a gun and............ (of course, I do not subscribe to such)

So is such a premise much of a reality?

I think you're mixing too much hollywood into reality. Deadly force of using your firearm is not something an officer does on a "proactive" basis...what I'm trying to say is we don't wake up and think to ourselves "hey, I'm going to take these guys out today because they deserve it."

All deadly force decisions are made based on the suspect's actions, so I have no idea when I'm going to get into any shooting. Your terms of "taking out" and "setting up" have no place in modern law enforcement (in a deadly force context)

If it later seems that some poetic justice was "given out" after a fatal shooting, it's purely coincidence based on the circumstances as a whole. Officers don't predetermine when and where deadly force is going to be used

    Fair enough answer.

Please understand, however, I was not asking how to do it, just if others knew about it occurring in reality of which the answer is, no.

I think John Wayne dying in a gunfight would have been a public service considering how racist & generally obnoxious he was...

I liked John Wayne's films. They were a lot cooler than a lot of today's productions.

Me too. I like John Wayne, but surprisely, his youngest son, Patrick is a chairman for John Wayne Cancer Institute in Saint John's Health Center in Santa Monica. His oldest son, Patrick's bro, Michael died of heart failure in 2003 at 68 so Patrick took over and now he's a chairman. Both of them used to play in their dad's movies.

Please don't talk SMACK about the Duke. Don't like him? Don't watch his films. And I'm sure you'll share with the fine members of RP your proof of his racist and obnoxious views?
