Beware the enemy is all around us....

SEATTLE — Evil — a word usually reserved for the likes of Adolph Hitler or Usama bin Laden — is now being used by more than a third of Canadian teens to describe the United States.

In a recent poll, 40 percent of Canadian teens said the United States is a force for evil in the world, with 50 percent saying it’s a force for good and 10 percent reporting they were undecided on the subject. French-Canadians were even harsher, with 64 percent of them calling America a force for evil.

“What they’re reacting to is a sense that the U.S. is belligerent,” said the pollster who conducted the phone survey, Greg Lyle. “The U.S. is sort of bellicose, warmongering [and has] this sort of cowboy diplomacy.”

But former Canadian diplomat Martin Collacot says the teens are responding to cues from their government, the media and their teachers.

The anti-Americanism from the United States' northern neighbors seemed to peak when the Iraq war started.

In one incident, hockey fans in Montreal booed during the playing of the American national anthem. Then-Prime Minister Jean Chretien’s spokesman was caught on mike calling President Bush a moron. And while the streets of Quebec were filled with war protesters, a member of Parliament from the ruling Liberal Party was quoted as saying: “Damn Americans. I hate those bastards.”

I think Bill O'Reilly from Fox gave this a bit of a going over a while ago. O'Reilly and Fox are clues as to how seriously it should be taken. Neither of them should be heeded all that much. Faux News and faux intelligence come to mind.

If hockey fans in Montreal want to get upset they should still be cranky about Rocket Richard ;)

All my best friends are American! But I will admit to not being a big fan of Bush...

Though Kerry is no better really. It's the entire military-industrial complex screw the poor make life easy for corporations but that's a whole other topic I'd rather not get into :P

Didn't some American city retaliate the original booing a couple years ago with a booing themselves?

Isn't Canada constantly getting slapped in the face by the USA over issues like Mad Cow and softwood lumber?

It is articles like this that bother me. Most Americans know very little about Canada, and they really don't care about any of us up here until something like this comes along. And then a guy like O'Reilly makes a big deal about it, and starts muttering anti-Canadian BS.

LMAO!!! Like I care what a teenager thinks, no matter what country they are from.
And I guess that means 2/3 think we are not evil right? So how did this become a negative article? Woo-Hooo, we're not evil and 2/3 Canadian teens love us.

I bet bin Laden isn't in Iraq - I reckon he's still out there on the Aghanistan-Pakistan border. If I were Bush I would have gone into Afghanistan and not opened up another front, as it were, with the invasion of Iraq. Getting bin Laden would be good.

Why do we care what Canadian teenagers think? Teens are among the most IMPRESSIONABLE minded people out there. Why did a topic on teens, Canadian teens at that end up as a Headline? Especially, since the majority didn't think the US was evil. It is truly a futile argument! :mad:

But it's stirring up passions here isn't it? All those little "mad" faces everywhere. Bill O'Reilly worked this story up and gave it some oxygen on Fox but that was for base motives. This is starting to remind me of Hate Week from Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four. You're right, it's futile.
