    Never Say, "Cuffed."

As pointed in my book "FOLLOW ME: Applied Theories For The Modern-Day Bounty Hunter," it is not prudent to say or write in a report that you 'cuffed' someone.

Why? While it is often overlooked, to say that you 'cuffed' someone is to say that you literally struck someone with an open hand.

I've submitted many felony and misdemeanor incident reports during my LE career, and I always wrote that I, "placed handcuffs on the suspect," or "after controlling the suspect, handcuffs were used to restrain him/her."

This is a simple issue, but adding hand to cuff may save you from being embarassed by a defense attorney trying to shake your resolve.

    Stay Safe,

LOL....ouch! I agree. I went to the theater and one quipped that he cuffed a guy because he caught him with his g/f. Got me puzzled at first if he's a cop or not. But turned out my daughter told me it's a silly slang to use "cuffed" meaning he hit someone's head.

Me either, yes it is better wording for a report to say you handcuffed someone, but I have never heard the part about hiting someone with an open hand.

I think he's just trying to sell books.

Like me I got frankly puzzled until my daughter who knows the slanguage pretty well explained what it means "hit" someone in the head. Or like "slap"...kids nowadays!!! We once have a few slangs, now every day, kids increase more and more slangs into the slanguage and they speak like that. Argh! Cuffed? So no wonder professor said not to use "cuffed" in the report because it mean to slap or hit or knock a person's head. Any more slang words???

Actually, I noticed that certain posts made use of the 'cuff' word  , and it only made sense to offer my views on that usage. Hey, if I drop something that is important and yet obscure and is included in my book then the book gets credit for having the information--that's only fair.

Finally, if saying handcuffed instead of cuffed saves anyone from future problems then a plug is a small price to read  .

i have personally never seen the word "cuffed" used in any report i've approved. in fact i would turn the report back over to the officer if i did see it used. the correct word is handcuffed. posts on a message board are different though.

That's why officers are taught by professors to use the complete word "handcuffed" in any report. So much for the good education, eh?

On message boards, as long as we can get the point across it's all good.
On a report, it wouldn't matter much as well, because most people will assume cuffed as being handcuffed. If some defense attorney says that he thinks that cuffed mean this in the report, all you have to do is to say, 'No, I used the word cuffed as being handcuffed, any more questions?"
