    Life insurance question

Do any LEO's here have additional life insurance that goes above what is provided for by your department? If so, do you pay for it through the department or privately?

The coverage provided by the Florida agency I will be working for is only 1x my annual salary and I want to get a larger policy for my family. I am trying to get an idea if it will be cheaper to get it on my own or pay an additional premium through my department. My concern is that any private insurance company sees LE as a high risk profession and will charge outrageous premiums.

I was going to ask the same question, but I searched and found this. Unfortunately nobody has answered it, yet.

Both me and my wife have life insurance. There's so many plans and companies out there, so it's best to take a few hours and search online for what fits you best. We stuck with our current insurance company that handles our car and house because you can add all together to get some money off

When I shopped around, not one company told me I had to pay higher premiums because of my profession. The main thing they look at is family history and your personal medical history

loooking. yes they do. I know the chapter for GA offers life insurance, as I worked for their advertising company and their statewide distribution magazine, you should check out Florida's chapter at least.

My dept gives us 50K plus another 50K if we die as a result of other than natural causes. My wife is eligible for 1/4 of my pension ( which is 1/2 of my pay averaged over the last 3 years I worked) fo rthe rest of her life.

Beyond that I carry TERM insurance on me in the amount of 700K and 500K on her. Life insurance is actually DEATH insurance and shold NOT be a savings account. Whole life insurance is a ripoff as it is quite expensive. Your spouse needs a LOT of money to stay home with the kids and not have to work in the event of your untimely demise. Term gives you the MOST coverage for your money.

I am paying about $630 a year for my coverage on the two of us, 15 year level term good for another 11 years. We are both in our mid 40's.

I am a FOMER licensed life insurance agent.

I have additional (supplemental) life insurance that is offered by my department. We have great 401/457 and good medical/dental too. I'm pretty fortunate to have it. ;)
