Elections time.. Anyone else have to worry?

About who will be your next Sheriff for those of you who work for the S.O's

Were I'm at, there are 3 running, all republicans. One is my boss, another is one that was fired from two other agencies, including our own, and another is someone that has next to no LEO experiance.

I've never experienced the stress I'm going through, and will for the next two months until the primarys in August.

I am really hoping our current sheriff gets re-elected, I'm forsure going to have a job, and will only learn more and get to work for the county I grew up in. But if the guy that was fired from our department gets in, I'm quiting forsure. I sware the man is bipolor and he will eventuly fire me if I don't quit as he knows I do not want him elected. He is that vendictive! The onther guy that has only a couple years of LEO experiance I'm willing to give a shot if he's elected. I've heard a lot of rummers I don't like about him, all have come from reliable sources, but I'd still work for him if he'll have me. One of hte rumers he's put out is everyone will have an opertunity to reapply for their job. He's been actively trying to recruite people to be his deputies. Keep in mind, we are only a 5 deputy opperation, hopefully 6 depending onw hat the county commissioners decide in the next couple weeks.

It just really sucks that sheriff's have to be elected and fight for their job every 4 years. It wouldn't be so bad if we were a larger county, but in these small populated counties it doesn't take much to fire everyone and have enough hired that day to replace everyone.

By the time the elections roll around, I sware I'll have an ulcer. I'll be out of town that day too, so I'll be advance ballet voting and calling every 15 minutes to find out if anyone knows any results since everyone is a republican and we'll find out who will be our sheriff since nobody is running democratic. Atleast it will give me plenty of time to job search if that one guy gets elected.

In California the change of Sheriff has nothing to do with Deputies keeping or losing thier jobs. If that is the case in Georgia I would avoid working for an SO also.

    Hawkman,

My advise to you is don't get involved in the election. If the candidate you are supporting doesn't win then your life may become a living hell. That's what happens out here. When I have been approched by candidates for Sheriff in the past I tell them that I support the Office of the Sheriff first above whom ever is elected to hold that position. That will usually cause them to leave you alone.

Thats how it is here in SC. I worked for a SO for a year and part of the oath was " I understand that i work for the pleasure of the sheriff and that i can be hired or fired for ANY reason at ANY time". So the sheriff can come in and say im just in a pissy mood so u are fired and there is nothing u can do about it except go job hunting.

It's not that way everywhere in Georgia. I have worked for a smaller department that was like that. But at the one I work for now, the current Sheriff has gone out of his way to make sure we have civil service protection with the county as well as CALEA accreditation, which helps also. We are in an election year also, but no one I have spoken to is the least bit worried.

That was the main reason I left my job with the state as a LEO and went federal. I hated living my life in four years increments.

I work for the police commission, not the Chief. The Chief cannot fire me, it must go through the board first and than I have civil service as well. I can't imagine ( sorry for those of you that are in a position like this) working for a SO that can clean house every 4 yrs.

I'm new to LE, so I obviously have no clue about the politics.

I know guys that have been with the SO for 20+ years.....how do they survive when their butts go on the chopping block every 4 years?

If it is that easy to get fired from county....then I sure am glad I'm with the city.
