    28 day rotations

    Hello,

Does anyone know if L.A.P.D. uses a 28 day rotation schedule?

Also, do you think 28 day rotations are better than working the same watch all the time or worse? What schedule does your department work? Do you think the morale from the rank-and-file is better or worse? Is it easier or harder on family and friends when you work 28 day rotations?

Which do you think is best...an 8 hour work day, a 10 hour work day or a 12 hour work day?

    Thanks for your input!

The departments I worked for both had shift change every six months. It was all seniorty based. After a couple of years you could get to any shift you wanted. I think a 28 day rotation would really suck! It would be hard to make family plans with your shift changing all the time. Puls having to change your sleeping schedule that often would get old quick.

I liked 10 and 12 hour shifts. There is nothing like having 3 & 4 days off without having to burn vacation time.
How come your house has wheels and your car doesn't?

    Agree with corporal716.
Our department has 12 hour shifts. (2 day shifts and 2 night shifts).
Every six month you can bid on any shift you want and transfers are made by seniority.
Like corporal716 said you got more time off without using your vacation time.

Florida highway Patrol I believe uses 28 days rotation schedule. and they do 8 hours shifts.
IMO that sucks too, since you get less time off. Then you have to adjust from days to nights, then switch back and it is just pain in the arse.

It is easier to work solely one shift and then switch when bidding time comes.

(I still cant understand the departments that do 2 days on, 2 dyas off, 2 nights on, 2 days off and so on schedule)

South Australia Police use various rostering but the most common patrol roster involves a 5 week cycle. I wouldn't recommend it as just as you re getting used to one shift (eg 7 night) you get a couple of days off (sometimes 5 days off depending on the roster) and then you are on another shift.

For many years we used the "wrong" cycle of rotation which was Day (0700) Night (2300) and Afternoon (1500) a better cycle is Day then Afternoon then Night.
Nothing to say - taking the Fifth.

I think the City made a big mistake when they went to the straight shift plan. While I do agree that a 28 day rotational period sucks, I think they should gone to something like a 3 month rotational plan. That way you could have the best of both worlds without getting stuck on one watch forever. Most of my good arrests were on midnights or afternoons but I did enjoy days when they came around (family life). By the way, are you a Chicago Police Officer?

    Hello,

Sgt. Saunders--Nope, I'm not a Chicago Police officer. I am in the midst of the L.A.P.D. process right now.

Are you an L.A.P.D. officer? Is that the shift rotation you were referring to?

    Thanks!

No, I'm not LAPD. I thought that perhaps you were. Good luck with your efforts to join LAPD.

My dept runs 2 shifts a day,12 hours. One day shift and a night shift. And we have a long week and a short week The 1st week we work Mon/Tues,off Wed/Thurs,work Fri/Sat/Sun. The next week we are off Mon/Tues,work Wed/Thurs,off Fri/Sat/Sun. That way everyone gets at least two weekends off a month. Also we rotate every 3 months. Not too bad a deal.
Lead me not into temptation.......someone talks me into enough sh!t as it is. .
