What comment would you have made on this kid's social media post?

Hit-run suspect caught after social media post

GRESHAM -- A 14-year-old Gresham boy was arrested Wednesday in the hit-and-run crash that critically injured another driver on U.S. 26 the day before.

Investigators said the boy was caught after he posted "somehow the police haven't found me yet" on a social media site. Then, they tracked him down at Sam Barlow High School, where he's a student.

Police believe the boy stole a van from a tree farm and then drove it onto the highway east of Gresham. The van sideswiped an SUV late Tuesday afternoon and then rolled.

The boy, whose name will not be released since he is a juvenile, was arrested late Wednesday. He was booked into the Donald E. Long Juvenile Detention Facility for felony hit-and-run and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle.

A witness reported seeing the driver of the van running from the scene. A K9 team followed a scent to west Stone Road and lost it.

The silver 1999 Ford Van was westbound on U.S. 26 just before 5 p.m. when it drifted onto the center grass median. The driver over-corrected, came back onto the westbound lanes and sideswiped the BMW. The van continued west for a bit, rolling and coming to rest upright across both eastbound lanes, according to Lt. Gregg Hastings with Oregon State Police.

Dean Jackson Pace, 52, who was driving the BMW SUV, was taken to Oregon Health and Science University in critical condition and later upgraded to serious condition, Hastings said. He suffered several broken ribs a ruptured spleen and a punctured lung.

Pace was wearing his seatbelt and the SUV's airbags deployed.

OSP was asking for any witnesses not already interviewed to call (503) 731-3030.

Not saying he should have expected to get away with it, but social media has ruined the younger generations' common sense, or maybe all criminals are just that stupid. I would have posted that it would only be a matter of time, thanks to him outing himself.

My guess is if he was going to blab on Facebook he would have blabbed anyway to friends or what have you and still would have got caught. Facebook just expedited the process.

Half the fun of doing something bad is telling your friends about it.

We solved a hit and run just like this after the driver bragged on FB exactly what he did and how he got away with it. one of his inner circle wasn't impressed and sent us the entire post He posted pictures of himself with all of the bumps and bruises he got ( looked like he got beat up) He even said how he called his GF to come get him and told her the whole story. She got popped too.

Yep and there'd be alot more unsolved crimes if people would keep their mouths shut. They know this and yet they still can't help themselves. Human nature I guess.

OSP investigators should have created a "Donald E. Long" facebook account and requested to be his friend after "Liking" his comment. Funny as heck to see "Donald E. Long and Dumbass are now friends."

    Now that's clever.

I'd tell the boy to keep his eye out for manual labor jobs, as jobs that require much thinking probably aren't a good fit for him.

I'm sure that the Oregon Department of Corrections will be keeping him occupied for several periods of time during his life.

I'm thankful that some criminals are this dumb. I'd keep silent, let naive criminals stay naive so they'll be more likely to get caught.

I wouldn't have stolen a vehicle, caused injury or likely death and fled the scene. A difference in character.
