I don't know of anyone around here paying informants. Usually they give the info up to save their own *** from charges.

We use both. Some are working off cases, but others do it for the cash. There are all sorts of reasons. Some are trying to clean up their act and want to burn their bridges. Sometimes it's even people trying to do away with the competition. The reason doesn't matter one bit to us as long as they can make good buys from decent size dealers and we can make cases.

We refer to those as Cooperating Defendants, not Confidential Informants. CI's get paid, CD's get consideration.

We use both as well. More often than not, most CI's who start off working charges end up working for us later for money. There are some nights that the CI makes more money than we do, with payments going up depending on the target and the amount of drugs purchased/seized.

I guess it's because I have only worked small departments. They don't even want to pay us.
