    SIG .45 or .40??

Well just recieved my conditional offer, now time to decide on which firearm to carry.

Department requires that we carry SIG's, but cal. can be either a 9mm, .40 or .45.

Wondering which one you guys would recommend and why.

    Thanks!

The one that you can control the best. If you can't hit your target consistently with a .45 don't carry it on duty until you can.

    Where are you at?

ETA: FYI - a conditional offer is not a final offer. The job can be withdrawn for any reason at any time. It's a good point to be at, but hardly means you have the job and should expend money on buying equipment. Whadya do if they change their mind?
Of every one hundred men, ten should not even be here. Eighty are nothing but targets. Nine are real fighters, and we are lucky to have them, for they make the battle. Ah, but the One... One of them is a Warrior... He will bring the others back.

I am a big fan of the 40 caliber. Nothing against the 45 at all, but give me a choice, I pick the 40. More bullets still in a big bore caliber.

IMHO since you have a choice......9mm to small and .45 is big ( it also cuts down on the # of rounds that you can have). .40 is a great choice. And yes , I carry a Glock 23 in .40.

But as was said , even if it was a .22 , carry the gun that you shoot the BEST with. Because shot placement is what matters when it is all said and done. The biggest caliber with the best accuracy = the best gun any of us can carry.

My PD issues and ONLY allows a Glock and only in .40. And we are issued ammo and carry any other kind.

    I carry a .40.

I just went to a training class and they had some pics and data from a study or something the FBI and or their National Academy did. According to their research, a 9mm 147 grain bonded jacketed hollowpoint is the same or slighlty larger (marginal) path of damage and penetration as the .40. Same bang for less weight and cheaper ammo price. Supposedly there is a movement within the FBI to try to go to a 9MM with this ammo over the .40 they have now. I have no other info other than that and don't have anything else on this.....maybse somebody else has more.

    .45 to too much IMO.

They're pushing the 9mm into a 357 mag. With the +p+ ammo, you can get a 125 grain 9mm bullet at 1300-1400 fps, or basically the ballistic equal to the 357 mag. And the 125 grain 357 mag JHP is the king of the mountain when it comes to "stopping power" on the streets over the years.

As stated, I am a fan of the .40. My department issues 9mm's. But we get the Winchester Ranger +p+, one of those rounds equal to a 357, so if I have to carry a 9, that's the ammo I want.

Now my all time favorite round to shoot IS a 45, but it's the 45 that's 138 years old, and was made for the Colt SAA

    My dept is cheap.

We use bow and arrow...and I mean arrow, not arrows. We have to reuse the same arrow over and over. Of course we have to buy our own anti-bacterial wash to clean it with in between shots because my dept won't pay for that either.

That's a step up. I thought you guys threw boomerangs at bad guys. If you miss, it's supposed to at least come back on its own, isn't it?

After attending a number of autopsies, I go with the .45 every time. The damage done by one .45 round is incredibly more than either the .38 special or 9mm. I haven't seen a dead body shot by a .40, I admit.

If I'm going to be sued, I want to be sued by the estate, not the person.

Back to the original post, the full size 220 (45) and the 226 (9mm and 40)
will work fine for duty work.
I would suggest you get a model with a rail for a weapon light.

I haven't heard any talk my way of going back to the 9mm. I have heard several Firearms Instructor types talking about going to the .45 though. Maybe the 9mm movement was to allow some others that may not be able to qualify with the .40 to do so I'm not sure.

Anyway, my vote falls with the .45 as well - I miss carrying my USP 45.

Even given the above, you may want to see what most of the guys on the department are carrying - there's a lot to be said for interchangeable mags in a firefight.

If you are locked into SIG I would stick with either the P226 or P229 in .40 or 9mm, whichever you are more confortable with.
The P220 (.45) just doesn't have the same capacity as those two. While you could carry more magazines to have the same amount of ammo, you would also have to do more magazine changes.

I carry a .45 at work (Glock 21SF), but if you are limited to the manufacturer mentioned then you have my opinion.

The P229 is really a good hand gun, and I like my calibers to begin with a "4" - so I would go with the .40
