    Best home defense gun.

i just figure, since there are so many cops here, y'all oughta have a good idea of which guns have the best stopping power, maneuverability and all that good stuff. What would be best, for an average person, with average sized hands, and shooting skills, and all that? Personally, I really, really, really wish these were legal, because I would definitely have one.

Impractical? Probably... Unwieldy? definitely.... Badass instant badguy blower-awayer? Hell yes.
Haha, ok, I just had to say that, but seriously, what is your idea of the best home defense gun?

Woops, before I get chewed out, I should have reworded myself. There is no such thing as a BEST gun, they are all awesome, but what is the most functional for the job?

    IMO, its all relative.

What are you competant with? If you can take out the eyes of a hopping jackrabbit at 20 feet with a .22 derringer, I might suggest that, but its doubtful.

fatboyjim, I never thought much of Ak's...I guess in a home, they would be ok, but their accuracy is awful, especially as they get hot. Bullet groups will shift like crazy. Desert Eagles are powerful, but they are hard to keep clean, and prone to jamming. If I wanted a .50 cal, I'd go with a Smith and Wesson revolver.
As for my shooting...I'd say better than average, simply because most people don't shoot. But, I've always been able to hit what I aim at.
Oh, and retdetsgt, those bb guns can be painful, but I liked my bow a lot better. Still like my bows actually.

You should consider where you live first. If you live in an apartment building, your requirements are going to be a lot different than if you live on a ranch in the middle of nowhere.

All in all, a Glock 17 in 9mm will probably do the job as well as anything. (no, I dont own one, at the moment anyway)

You like shotguns, but your picture above is a big NO NO. However there is the Judge Pistol that Taurus is marketing. (I do have some reservations about a 410 though. )
Taurus International Manufacturing Inc - The Judge

You could buy an old Ithaca Shotgun and put a folding stock on it.
ITHACA DEER SLAYER 12 GA. : Pump at GunBroker.com

Rock River Arms: RRA LAR Pistols
    Or maybe a AR15 pistol.
On a clear night, I can see the other deputies emergency lights at least 10 miles away.
But it isnt flat here LOL

Kels, that makes sense. I'm not really a fan of the 9mm caliber, it gets the job done, it just takes too long.
Also, I would NOT recommend the Taurus Judge, I saw a video of it being tested somewhere, and with the .410 shells, it's patterns at 20 feet away were like 3 feet wide. Probably because of the rifling in the barrel. I also have reservations about the .410
Haha, yeah, I like shotguns. And I know, I definitely am not planning on going to Federal prison for 10 years. I think one of these would be nice:

The barrel is already at a good length, while still being legal. i like double barrel shotguns, for the same reason I like revolvers. Less parts to break.
Those pistols look interesting, but .223 caliber isn't even good for mule deer, let alone a drugged up intruder. .40 might be good.....
Edit: How do I make those pictures normal size?

When I was working a drug case against other cops, I kept a 12 gauge coach gun by my bed loaded with 00 buck. I sold it just recently. It was made by some Brazilian company, but worked just fine. I shot a box or so of rounds through it at the range to make sure it was reliable and it passed. I didn't want to spend a small fortune for it. In fact, I bought it at a Portland pawn shop.

The reasoning being anything would be a fairly close range and the shot would probably stay within my house.

I remember sleeping with a 12ga a few times when I worked as a narc. My old black lab was the alert/alarm system. The duty 45 pistol was stashed within easy reach. For the shotgun I prefer the #2 or BB size shot in a standard length duck load.

I don't know how practical something like this is, but you might consider:
