As a cadet that is planning on carrying a 9mm, I'm curious how many officers use hollow point ammo as their duty rounds. Is it common/rare, etc?

You really shouldn't worry about it too much. Your duty rounds will be issued. Worry more about getting on the job, as the choice of rounds is probably out of your hands.
With that said, I don't know of any departments/agencies that do not use hollow points.

Unless you work will somewhere that JHP ammo is illegal (New Jersey), the
odds are you will carry/be issued JHP.
The problem with full metal jacket type ammo is over penetration
of what you are shooting at. This can lead to an innocent bystander
getting shot accidently. This is a bad thing.
Any quality JHP should work properly.
On a clear night, I can see the other deputies emergency lights at least 10 miles away.
But it isnt flat here LOL
JHP is legal in NJ for cops and civilians in their home. It is not legal for civilainas who have CCW, hunting or LEO's carrying under HR218, for now.

Really I think the stuff I carry in my G23 hurts more than my duty ammo....don't wanna test that though.

No mistake on yourpart and no apology. I just explained the law a little further! Most cops here can't figure it out. The communist state of NJ has the most ridiculous rules. You can shoot somebody breaking in your home, but you can't leave your property with HP's. Makes a lot of sense huh?
As for the LEO's of-duty/carrying on HR218, no cop has been arrested/charged with such. There was one case where a NYPD off duty shot a perp trying to car jack him. The shoot was good but the district attorney took issue he shot the perp with a HP, specifcally issued to him by the NYPD. While not arrested, the DA did present the matter to a grand jury but they did not return a true bill. When LEOSA changes that nonsense will end.
And I came from NY. Thus gun registration here is "voluntary" if you move in and if you want to register, you get a "firearms ID card" to buy guns. But there is a law now that says you can't buy handgun ammo unless you own gun in that caliber. Well guess what they deem as the only "proof of ownership?" The firearms ID card. So much for being voluntary!

Is this a real question?

Gotta remember norm, the days of young men in this country being taught to "ride, shoot straight, and speak the truth" are gone. I think I read that statistically, around half of all new cops have never shot a gun before the academy.

They've got us surrounded? Good. Now we can fire in any direction, those bastards wont get away this time
An amateur will train until they get it right. A professional will train until they can't get it wrong.
That statistic is probably close to correct too. I'd shot a rifle (2 times), shotgun (2 times), and air rifle (dozens), but never a handgun before the academy. I still got near perfect scores on semi-auto (99%), revolver (99%), and shotgun (100%). But yeah, I'd say half of my class had never shot a handgun before.
Now that's just sad.
ETA: Good shooting Redwing.

Around here most officers carry their own weapons, or at least have the option to. That being said all the ones I know carry JHP"s ( Hydra-shock, Golden saber, etc..)..
I've been personally experimenting with Hornady's critical defense rounds for concealed carry, Nice controlled expansion even through thick clothes and such.. Next time I hit the range I plan on seeing how they penetrate wood, glass, and maybe a car door or two..
However I've never personally seen a LEO carry this round, They're still pretty new though so time will tell.. Whatever you carry make sure you shoot plenty of it, each round will have different characteristics (Speed, Energy, Range etc..) Some don't like particular guns.. So shoot, shoot, and stay safe..![]()
I've carried JHPs on every agency I worked for since 1978. I don't think there is an agency in the state that does otherwise.
This career is not a sprint, it is a marathon.
I'm pretty sure this is illegal, but I know a guy who knows a guy, who knows a guy, who put mercury in his hollow points. The mercury doesn't explode or do anything fancy, but it's pretty dense, so it tears things up when it hits, and it blows the bullet apart. (According to him, I haven't tried it.) I also know a guy who knows a guy who knows a guy who cuts his shotgun shells so that the end of the shell goes with the payload, and dumps it all in one place. I haven't seen it, but if it didn't jam the gun, it'd be pretty freaking devastating. Imagine a whole shell full of deer shot hitting you in the torso. Anyway, yeah, sorry that doesn't really fit the topic, but here in Idaho, you hear about all sorts of redneck schemes, and inventions. Stuff like wooden bullets, turning FMJ bullets backwards in the case(that actually works pretty well. ), rock salt in shotgun shells, and splitting your bullets crossways, so they expand in four directions. I have NO idea if any of those work, (except the FMJ one), so do NOT try any of them. And if you do, don't blame your untimely demise on me.
You've read too much action/western fiction my friend. I've read much of it too but that doesn't mean that the authors knew what they were talking about. I read one book that had the "hero" shoot a 1911 holding it a little wrong and the extreme recoil broke his wrist. Uhh, yeah.
The cut shotgun shell is very likely to damage a barrel as the extra diameter of the forward part of the shell going with the shot charge will raise pressures dramaticly. It may work once without blowing your shotgun up but a one shot then throw it away shotgun isn't very cost effective.
Mercury desolves lead, it used to be used to remove stuck bullets in rifles when other methods failed. It works pretty quick and you need to get the white powdery residue out of the gun ASAP as it is very corrosive to steel. The mercury filled bullet has been used in the TV/movies by "hitmen" but I doubt the real world effectiveness of it considering it will eat its way out pretty quick.
