    A handgun for my wife

My wife has recently told me that she would like to apply for a Pa. Firearms permit, as it is her Right as an American.

Being the supportive and understanding husband, I immediately asked her: "So what kind of handgun do you want then?"

I suggested this as I think she would appreciate the smaller size and the rail for a light. (And I am partial to Kimbers)
Any other suggestions? Thank you in advance.

If you've got the bread to burn, can't go wrong with that weapon.

That is the functional variable there. That is the dream weapon. It would require some saving, but every Kimber I have ever used was a solid weapon, so I would like to break her into it with something nice.

I'm thinking a Derringer that she can tuck into a garter on her leg. :D

Seriously, that's a nice handgun but unless she is an avid shooter the .45 may be a little much.
Excuse me Officer, I have a stupid Question. "No problem, I've got a stupid answer for you!"

    There is a solid idea.

I was considering that as well. She has shot a .40 and a .357, and she seemed to like the .40 the best (a Kimber Custom II). If I could find a smaller .40 that would be ideal. Any suggestions for a good lady weapon? My wife is 5'10", and her hands are a bit smaller than mine. (not like the Sienfield episode)

edit: This one is nice, but, yet again, the price comes up.

Might have to set up a buffet of weapons for her to try out...

Is she going to put in the training time to become proficient with the safety?

Yes. That is one of the first things we talked about. We both grew up around weapons, and she got used to a lot of things while I was in the Marines. But yes, a resounding yes.

I spent quite some time as a Safety Officer, so that is foremost in my mind. I have no intention of getting my wife a weapon and letting her run wild.

I'm lucky that she is a reasonable person and that she actually said she wanted me to go over everything with her, and work her through the safe handling of it. I was going to anyway, but the fact that she asked made me happy.

Thank you for that question though! It is THE most important one, in all reality.

I think he was more referring to manipulating the thumb safety in the 1911 rather than "safe handling".

Oh. I assumed he meant "safe handling" when he said safety. That is another plus for Kimbers, since they have the ambidextrous safety.

    My Kimber's safety isn't ambidextrous. ;)

It's just the muscle memory issue she needs to have instill through several hundred draws and holsters to manipulate that thing each and every time.

    also, a good quote.

There are hundreds of millions of gun owners in this country, and not one of them will have an accident today. The only misuse of guns comes in environments where there are drugs, alcohol, bad parents, and undisciplined children. Period.

I see what you did there. Well played, Sir. You are correct, the safety, as an inanimate object, is not ambidextrous. It is, however, able to be worked by a left, or right handed shooter ;)

And in light of this, I will not make her wear a suicide holster like we got stuck with.

A 1911 is a fine weapon as long as you put the time and effort into learning to properly use it. That said my wife chose her concealed carry weapon after shooting many and decided something different than I would have chosen for her. It shoot well, is well made and reliable and she can accurately shoot it.

I highly suggest letting her shoot a large assortment of pistols and revolvers and see what she feels comfortable with.

    Thanks MountainMan,
I think that's what I am going to do. Worst that could happen is she will want them all.

I don't know any women who wants a mid size 1911. Most prefer small revolvers and hate operating slides.

I would let her pick her own gun for sure.
